iPAQ & ActiveSync

I have an iPAQ 3850 with PPC 2003, I am on the latest
version of ActiveSync and I am running XP Pro. I am
unable to get my iPAQ to sync. I place it in the cradle
and it is recognized in Device Manager as the correct USB
and sometimes it is not recognized and I see "unkown"
device in Device Manger. When the USB is recognized, the
ipaq and activesync never connect and then I take the
ipaq out of the cradle and try again. this is when I get
a balloon message that reads "windows does not recognize
the device". So, I take the ipaq out because by this
time it has turned off. I try to push the on button and
nothing happensand the battery light blinks yellow
continously. So, i soft reset and then the ipaq turns
back on. Why is this happening? Syncing was going fine
yesterday and now I am unable to sync with work or home!
Do I need to reinstall active sync and do a hard reset or
just do one and not both?

Hi,

When you plug in the iPAQ into the USB port, go into the Device Manager and
delete the "unknown device" and reboot the computer. As the computer is
booting, perform a soft reset the iPAQ and then attempt to connect. That
should help solve your problem.

In most cases, a hard reset will resolve your issue. However, that should
be your last resort since you end up losing data and you need to reinstall
third party programs that had been installed earlier on the device. Unless
you already have performed a backup earlier.

I tried as you suggested and the Device Manager shows the
Windows CE, but activesync and the ipaq do not
synchronize. Any other suggestions?

Hi,

* Does it display any error message in the Activesync window?
* Any particular reason for this error to come up? e.g. Installation
of new software or hardware / computer crash.. etc since you
mentioned you were able to synchronize this not long ago.

Hi,

The only thing I noticed was that I had an xp udate
hotfix (sp2) Q819696 on July 8 and then on the july 9, i
had problems. The fix is for directx 9.0. what i am
wondering is why i get hotfixes for sp2 and i am on sp1.
Who knows. I tried uninstalling active sync and
reinstalling, but I am still unable to connect via USB. I
may need to go back to PPC 2002, but I really don't want
to. If you have any other ideas, i am open for
suggestions.

Hi,

* Did you set any system restore points prior installling the update? If
yes, try restoring it by referring to the following MSKB article --

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=306084

* Does the Activesync window display any message when you attempt to
synchronize?
* Have you been getting the "unknown device" error again?

no, I have system restore off, but turned it back on.
when I sync the ipaq, I see the "usb" window pop up on
the ipaq, but no sync happens. The device manger sees
the usb correctly and then when the ipaq tries again, i
get the balloon stating unrecognized device. then my
ipaq turns off in the cradle and I pull the ipaq out of
the cradle and then i can't turn it on so i have to soft
reboot the ipaq. It is becomming a vicisous cycle. I
can sync infrared at work and at home, but takes longer.
I really think it is the hotfix. I have the same hot fix
at work as well.

Hi,

It might be the hot fix. But try this approach to update the USB driver if
the unknown device appears in the Device Manager.

1. Insert the Activesync CD into your drive.
2. Right-click My Computer.
3. Select Properties.
4. Click Device Manager.
5. Click the entry of the device.
6. Click Properties.
7. Click the Driver tab.
8. Click Update Driver and point it to the CD.

Another possibility is that the cradle is faulty.

Raj,

Can't update the driver. Either it is recognized at
cradle connection or it is not. I thought it may have
been the cradle too, but it's not. My bet is still on the
hotfix.

Hi,

Did you try connecting your PPC to another computer as that doesn't have
this hotfix installed ? If it works on another computer, then the fault can
be isolated to your computer itself otherwise we know for sure its the
cradle.

Another option you can try would be to boot the computer in Safe Mode and
then access the device manager to remove the installed devices....

1. Unplug all USB devices except for a USB keyboard (if any)
or else your keyboard will not respond.
2. Enter into the Safe Mode by doing the following:

Restart your computer and before the Windows logo appears, press the [F8]
key.

3. Click Start, Control Panel, and then double-click the System icon.
4. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
5. Remove any "Other" or "Unknown" devices.
6. Remove any drivers listed under USB. (Since the USB cables were
disconnected from the computer in step 1, it shouldn't list any. If it
does, delete them.)
7. Remove the root hub.
8. Reboot the computer.
9. Click Start, Control Panel, and then double-click the System icon.
10. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
11. Verify the root hub is reinstalled correctly.
12. Plug in the USB devices that were unplugged in step 1.

And then attempt to synchronize after connecting your PPC. If its
successful, attach all the other USB devices one by one.

You could refer to the following DELL Web page to help troubleshoot the USB
problem --

http://service.ap.dell.com/ap/kb/vie...3+7860,00.html

The section titled "Forcing USB to be Redetected" explains the same thing as
I have suggested above. I hope this information helps you solve your
problem !!!

Raj
