Issue with BITS continually downloading from internet SBS 2008

I have installed SBS 2008. After having my internet shaped 3 months in a row
I have found that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service constantly
downloading around 200 MBytes an hour. I cannot find a way to stop the
downloading apart from disabling the service which means WSUS no longer
functions.

I am new to Windows Server and on a steep learning curve, everything else is
working perfectly (as far as I can see) so any assistance on sorting out this
issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for post.

Does this issue always occur? If the SBS 2008 server is a brand new one, it may detect and download and install a lot of Service Pack and update to keep itself updated.
The BITS service is to used transfer in the background using idle network bandwidth, if the service is disabled, any application depend on it like Windows Update and
WSUS will not work. Therefore, it may be normal for BITS service to constantly download updates from the Microsoft Update website via WSUS.

following is the default SBS 2008 BITS Services status

Name Status Startup Type Log On As
Background Intelligent Transfer Service Started Automatic (Delayed Start) Local System

Default SBS 2008 running Services

Also, please check if there is any BITS service related events in the Event logs and post back the detailed records information.

More information about WSUS in SBS 2008:

Hope this helps.

Hi Robbin

Thanks for the reply, I left the WSUS and BITS servers running for 3 months
whcich resulted in the server continually downloading between 100 - 150
MBytes per hour which resulted in the interent service being shaped every
month as I would exceed the downlad cap. The WSUS service was working
correctly and all workstations and SBS 2008 were being updated.

I disabled WSUS which made no difference to the amount of data being
downloaded and it wasn't until I disabled BITS that the downloading stopped.
I could uinderstand a large amount of updates needing to be retrieved from
Microsoft initially but the BITS service continually downladed data. I have
no way of seeing what was being downloaded.

There are no BITS realted events on the logs.

Regards Peter Cook

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

So why do you think and where/how did you find the BITS service is downloading? Do you use any monitoring software? Do you notice which folder is getting bigger?

At this point, please try to clear the BITS queued jobs to see if it changes. Perform the following steps:

1) Stop the BITS service. <Net stop bits>
2) Ipconfig /flushdns
3) Look in the following folder:

Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\

4) Delete the two files "qmgr0.dat" and "qmgr1.dat" (these files will be recreated)

5) Restart the BITS service.

6) Restart the Automatic Updates Service.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I've been redirected here from svchost.exe -k netsvcs constantly downloading thanks to user trg53.

But I want to thank Robbin Meng [MSFT] for his reply, the steps he mention resolved my problem.

I just joined this forum only for that. So Thanks again Robbin Meng [MSFT].
