Issue with IE8 and Google

I have started to encounter a problem with IE8 and Google. Often (not
always) when I do a Google search and click on an entry in the resulting
list, I get (in my new browser window) a URL something like

http://%3c!doctype%20html%20public%20%22-//W3C//DTD%20XHTML%201.0%20Transitional//EN%22%20%22http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd%22%3E%3Chtml%20xmlns=%22http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml%22%3E%3Chead%3E%3Cmeta%20http-equiv=%22Content-Type%22%20content=%22text/html;%20charset=UTF-8%22%20/%3E%3Cnoscript%3E%3Cmeta%20http-equiv=%22refresh%22%20content=%220;url=http://earthlink-help.com/main?&url=http:%2F%2F3jack.blogspot.com%2F2009%2F1 0%2F3jacks-translation-of-tgm-part-8h.htmlInterceptSource=0&ClientLocation=us&Partici pantID=xj6e3468k634hy3945zg3zkhfn7zfgf6&FailureMod e=1&SearchQuery=&FailedURI=http%3A%2F%2F92.242.140 .1%2Ffeed.php%3Fref%3Dhttp%3A%252F%252Fwww.google. com%252F%2523sclient%3Dpsy%2526hl%3Den%2526q%3D%25 2Bgolf%2B%252Brelease%2B%252Btgm%2B-golfwrx%2526aq%3Df%2526aqi%3D%2526aql%3Df%2526oq%3 D%2526pbx%3D1%2526bav%3Don.2%2Cor.r_gc.r_pw.%2526f p%3D9806ae24d4306e76%26ip%3D76.144.210.214%26txt%3 D1&AddInType=4&Version=2.1.8-1.67base&Referer=&Implementation=0"/></noscript><script%20type="text/javascript">window.location.replace("http://earthlink-help.com/main?InterceptSource=0&ClientLocation=us&Participa ntID=xj6e3468k634hy3945zg3zkhfn7zfgf6&FailureMode= 1&SearchQuery=&FailedURI=http%3A%2F%2F92.242.140.1 %2Ffeed.php%3Fref%3Dhttp%3A%252F%252Fwww.google.co m%252F%2523sclient%3Dpsy%2526hl%3Den%2526q%3D%252B golf%2B%252Brelease%2B%252Btgm%2B-golfwrx%2526aq%3Df%2526aqi%3D%2526aql%3Df%2526oq%3 D%2526pbx%3D1%2526bav%3Don.2%2Cor.r_gc.r_pw.%2526f p%3D9806ae24d4306e76%26ip%3D76.144.210.214%26txt%3 D1&AddInType=4&Version=2.1.8-1.67base&Referer=&Implementation=0");</script></head><body></body></html>

and it cannot be found. I don't seem to run into this using Firefox and if I
right click on the URL and select either 'New Window' or 'New Tab' things
work fine. This seemed to start maybe 2 weeks ago. Note that Earthlink is my
ISP and they seem to be a participant in this somehow. In the example above
the URL that I was selecting was actually

http://3jack.blogspot.com/2009/11/3j...m-part-8h.html

Is this issue unique to me?

Thanks.

Yep, because "<!DOCTYPE ..." is *inside* the web page. It is part of
the HTML document. You are seeing several lines of HTML *code* from the
web page in the URL.

I suspect you installed a ****ed up add-on to IE, or you migrated to IE8
but installed an add-on in an earlier version of IE (but which is not
compatible with version 8 of IE). Look at what add-ons you installed
into IE8. Might clue you in as to which add-ons you installed, which
ones you don't want, and which ones you have rarely used and don't
really need.

Run IE8 in its no add-ons mode and retest to see the problem continues.

Thanks, I'll mess around with this stuff and see what happens.

But it does seem clear that much of the URL could not possibly (or at least
reasonably)
be HTML content on the target web page. Still some errant plug-in/add-on is
a likely suspect,
although the fact that this is (IIRC) only a Google search page issue also
seems odd. Heck - could
be some Google add-on.

I played around with various plug-ins/add-ons with no success. So I just
converted to IE9
and the problem seems to be gone. I'm just posting this for 'completeness'
in case
someone else encounters the same problem and stumbles into this thread.

Right or wrong I do appreciate the help/insight from VanguardLH.

Note: Quoting was manually corrected due to the Dave's use of WLM v15
which discontinued proper prefixing and indentation of quoted content.

Haven't a clue what "played around" means. My suggestion was to
disabled ALL of them and just see how IE8 alone behaved. If that didn't
work, you could click the Reset button under Advanced options (which is
likely what happened when you installed a new version of IE).

I didn't know how to 'disable all' of the plug-ins. I am sure that there is
a simple
way to do that. I didn't/don't know what it was.

So I just disabled all the plug-ins that I either didn't recognize (there
were a couple)
or didn't know for sure that I had been using for many years (and I
understand that
the, for example, RealPlayer plugin that I am using now is different than
the one that
I used in 2008). There were only a handful left.

Regarding the supposition that the ultimate URL string was part of the
target website
HTML, that is clearly not the case as it consistently contained the string

www.earthlink-help.com

which is where errant URL's are (most irritatingly) directed when using my
ISP.
There is no way that this is part of any HTLM on all the websites where I
encountered the problem (which was pretty much any website listed by
Google).

dave

ps. As should be clear here it isn't like I worked really hard on this
problem. I was focused on a solution and found it (had been
dithering on the IE9 question anyway).

I intended to add that on at least one occasion (on a very limited/obscure
webpage) I verified that the doctype tag was not used and the doctype
string was always part of the errant URL strings.

Since I am now of IE9 I can not longer experiment (the issue is now
gone from my perspective).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just for completeness, some additional information on this issue.

On using IE9 I run into this problem (as a very gross estimate) at a rate
of maybe 5% of what it was in IE8. My plug-in/add-on status at this point
is the same as it was when I changed from IE8 to IE9 (less/more whatever
changes were associated with the upgrade to IE9).

I have yet to run into a case on IE9 where 'backing up' my browser and
're-clicking the link' (again, this is ONLY when the link is in a Google
search list) doesn't resolve the problem. I don't recall this ever resolving
the problem in IE8. FWIW.

Since I am now at IE9, it isn't something that I can (easily)
continue to experiment with (from an IE8 perspective).
