After the following two updates for only our XP systems:
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2006 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB908519)

I appears I cannot:
- click "Start" then "Search" the search window never appears
- Debug in the Visual Studio "Says i'm not a member of the debugging user
group" which i am
- Run several in house applications
- install windows updates from the web site, tells me to set "Userdata
persistence" to enabled which it already is

Anybody else having these kind of issues? any solutions?

I unistalled KB908519 but the other update is not in the list of installed
software updates in the add or remove programs. No change after un-installing
KB908519.

Help,
Mike

yes, since December 13th.
I can't find my notes on which three they were, but one was Windows
Installer 3.1v2, another was a validation tool and the other was a security
patch.

I'm hosed if I manually install the new installer, can't install anything.
I have a fully retail licensed XP Home and have spent over 100 hours on
this, 50 on phone with ms and they were supposed to call me back, but have
not.
Never made their phone appointment with me.

This has cost me tons and I'm considering gathering everyone who has lost
time and revenue to have a meeting with an attorney.

It is beyond me why they will not fix this bs.

I had a bunch of my taskbar icons disappear after the same update. They
showed up in the taskbar propeties window as "past icons"! This occured on
my Dell 9300 laptop... my Dell 8300 desktop insalled the same update without
a hitch. It took several rounds of "system restore" and then downloading
each update separately to finally fix it and put it back the way it was WITH
the update installed. Don't know if this helps... it's not exactly an
answer, but at least you know you're not alone! Good luck!

Today, my Notepad (running Windows XP SP-2) informed me of three
updates:

Security Update for Windows XP: KB908519
Malicious Software removal Tool for January 2006: KB890830
Security Updates for Outlook 2002: KB892841

I allowed Automatic Update to download and install these, however the
update hangs when initialising and never gets any further.

I have had to power off my Notepad (shutdown simply tries installing
the updates again) to get past this, but any attempts to install these
updates fails. I have even tried doing it from the Microsoft web site
but it tells me I must install the waiting updates (on my PC) first!!!

I have now spent enough time on this and will switch off auto updates
until Microsoft come up with a solution (if they do).

Paul.

I appear to have resolved this issue by doing the following:

- Reboot PC
- Disable NIS 2005 Firewall and Antivirus
- Run Custom updates from MS website
- Install three updates one at a time, the January 2006 Malicious
software removal tool was installed last.

All appears to be okay.
