I have had escalating problems with Windows Update beginning with last week's
updates for IE6 and Win 2000. First, the IE update appeared to download but
did not install. The second update (for Win 2000) froze at about 40% of
installation, and the Cancel button was disabled. I downloaded the individual
updates manually to my desktop and all of them freeze while installing.

Now, Windows Update will not complete a scan, it just keeps going and going
without revealing any updates. Also, I disabled Automatic Updates because the
downloading icon continually stopped at 2%.

It may help to know I have occasionally had a similar problem installing
other various software despite closing down everything in the taskbar but AV.

I hope someone can help me with this. I'm sitting here with a vulnerable
system.

Why stop there? AV frequently is the cause of poor installs.

If you need to you can download the updates with AV active
but disable it before starting an install to ensure that it doesn't
interfere with that part of the update process.
