java downloads

HELP!
I have been trying to access a games site for the past few weeks that I was
on daily.When i get a message to update my java version. This I have been
trying to do for at least a week, but when I go on the download site
www.java.com and try to download I get the message
The installation package could not be opened.Verify that the package exists
and that you can access it.or contact application vendor to verify that this
is a valid windows installer package.
I am quite a novice at this so please try not to use too many technical
language!
