As I still can not find a solution to my problem when I wanted to join a
windows vista business based client computer to a windows NT 4.0 domain. The
error message is "An Active Directory Domain Controller for the domain
ABC_domain could not be contacted".

As far as I know, in a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 domain, Active Directory is
not available.

Anyone can help, please ?

"Run as administrator" secpol.msc

Under Local Policies > Security Options

Change "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level"
from "NTVLM2 responses only"
to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated"

Also I had to use the wizard from "system properties" (compuer name, domain
& workgroup settings) to make it work.

In addition to Rene's good advice, be aware of this issue you may encounter:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940268

By the way, Vista clients in an NT 4.0 domain is not tested or supported by
Microsoft. But it might work.

Hope it helps,

Thank you for your advice.

However, I did not seem to be helpful. I tried your method but I am still
getting the same error message as mentioned in my last letter.

Anymore advice, please. I do not mind trying again.

Regards

I have the same setup as you, Vista Business workstation joined to a Windows
NT-4 Domain.

It's been sometime since I set it up, so I'm going to have to go from
memory.

Go to the NT-4 Domain server and delete the vista machine's name from the
server (in Server Manager).
Once it confirms that the name is deleted, reenter the name exactly as shown
on the vista machine.
Then have the Vista machine try to join the domain again.

Sometimes, the problem is in the security hash. Example: You have an old
machine named "Fred" and it is a member of the domain. You either replace
the machine called "Fred" completely with a new machine also called "Fred",
or you upgraded the Fred to the Vista OS. This may the names will appear to
be the same, but the security hash (an encrypted identifier) behind the
scenes does not match so you won't be allowed to join the domain.

I'm assuming you're doing this at work, so you'll also want the "Network and
Sharing Center" in Vista to show this as a "Private" network.

I hope this helps.
