Hi,
I am trying to install JRE on my laptop that has Vista Ultimate. The new JRE
6.0_16.exe starts installing but fails. It gives the error that "Unable to
install Java Runtime". I would appreciate help in this regard. I did
uninstall the previous versions since they were not recognized by vista and
none of the apps were working that requires java.

thanks

I can't directly answer your question but I may have an idea for you.

I gave up on Vista when it was clear that Win7 was actually going to come
out and have spent the last couple of months designing a configuration and
provisioning process for my POE's worldwide operations.

Working with the RTM version of Windows 7 and running the JRE installers
(1.5.0_20 and 1.6.0_15 - I hadn't noticed that _16 was out) I found that
v1.5 intalled with no problems, but v1.6 aborted with an error message that
it was unable to validate the certificate used to sign the installer. This
was on a brand-new install of Windows 7 Enterprise.

The solution was to manually download the May 2009 version of rootsupd.exe,
the updated root (and also CA) certificates from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

This was done on another machine, but after the installer was run on the
Win7 box the JRE 1.6 kit installed without any problems.

Incidentally, I've seen this same problem on both Vista and Windows 7 when
you attempt to run Windows Update: you get an utterly irrelevent error
telling you that your system clock is too far out of sync with Microsoft's
server clocks. Again, download rootsupd.exe and apply it to fix things up.

Good luck.
