I tried get this question answered in the office newsgroup.
Without any effect.
Therefore let me ask this question here please.

---------------------

Hi

Only following viewers are installed on my machine:
Excel Viewer 2003
Word Viewer 2003
PowerPoint Viewer 2003

No other MS Office software is installed.
I did recently an attempt to install patches issued
with MS06-027, -037 and -038.
The patch 917346 for Word viewer (the root KB is 917336) installs without
any problems.
The patch 918425 for Excel viewer (the root KB is 917285) as well.
The same applies to 917151 for Excel viewer (the root KB is 917284)

However it does not want to install for word viewer.
It is visible only in the section of Excel viewer under Control Panel-Add
Remove Software, but not in the Word viewer section.
Installing the patch generates following error message:
"Security update for office 2003 (kb917151)
The expected version of the product was not found on your system."

What am I missing to consider installing the patches ?

The patches from MS06-027, -37 and -038
have been downloaded manually and saved on the hard disc.
Installing them is doing manually as well.

I can see some discrepancy in the descriptions
of related security bulletins.

The table 'Affected Software and Download Locations for MS06-037 through
MS06-039' from 'Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for July, 2006'
does not enumerate the Word Viewer 2003 as the affected software.
Only the excel viewer 2003 is here named.
But Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-038 lists in the section
'Affected Software' the Word Viewer 2003 too.

What does actually apply to ?
The Summary for July or the security bulletin ms06-038 ?
If Word Viewer is indeed not affected, then no wonder
the patch 917151 does not install for it.
But on the other side why then the error message
"Security update for office 2003 (kb917151)
The expected version of the product was not found on your system."
during patch installation ?

Uninstall your Office viewer applications. Download fresh versions
(updated) of the Office viewers and install them. Then try Windows Update
again.

In general, it is difficult to help people who choose to download updates
manually, and then query why they won't install. Please allow Windows
Update to determine whether updates are necessary.

The viewers I have installed (2003, word, excel, pp)
are the most fresh versions available at all. I can't download
more fresh versions.

I do always manual updates, cause a lot of people
complain here about problems with windows update.

So do I. I will *not* allow automatic updates.

Robin,

Windows Update nor Automatic Update will offer updates for Office
components. One *must* use Microsoft Update.
Sadly, I can get neither the Word Viewer nor Excel Viewer updates to
install. Have uninstalled them, reinstalled them, tried to install the
updates ... and they both fail with no discernible errors.

You're not alone ... I can not get either the Word nor Excel Viewer
updates to install either.
The only anomaly in the Hotfixlog, located in
Documents and Settings\<userName>\Local Settings\Temp\OHotfix
appears to be this :

UpgradeMsi=1
MsiUpgradeURL="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=20610"

Going to : http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=20610
reveals -

> Windows Installer 2.0 is required for this update

Not good, since Windows Installer 3.1 is installed on my system.
The only other error in the log is -

> Applying patches to product {90850409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9} Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003...
> Applying patch D:\DOCUME~1\MOWGRE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\WORD VIEW.msp...
> Command line: PATCH="D:\DOCUME~1\MOWGRE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.T MP\WORDVIEW.msp" REBOOT=ReallySuppress
> The update failed.
> Finished processing the update on 08/06/2006 at 14:11:34.

> FindError result: failed
> Error 1603 not ok to report to Setup Watson.

And, so it goes ... I don't have the time nor patience to troubleshoot
the failed updates. Best advice I can give is to ensure that Excel and
Word docs come from trustworthy sources and are scanned with antivirus
software prior to opening them.
