A strange thing has just happened with the volume of junk mail I am
receiving.
Up to yesterday it was around 25 to 30 items per day; yesterday I upgraded
from IE 8 to IE 9 but did not change any settings or give my email address;
I did not touch WLM, left it as it was.
I am now receiving a massive increase in junk, approx 150 items per day and
I can think of no reason for the increase as I have done nothing out of the
ordinary.
Has anyone else had such an increase in junk?
Thank you

First let me make absolutely clear that upgrading from IE8 to IE9 is not
the cause of you receiving more than your daily quota of spam messages.
So rule out IE9 or Microsoft for that matter.

Second, you haven't said anything about which email account is this that
is receiving 150 messages a day. If it is hotmail or "live.com" than
their might a solution as I had the same problem about 2 months ago.

Third, you don't need to give out your email address "recently" to start
receiving spam messages because spammers were asleep up to now and out
of the blue they managed to get your email address from their old
collection. they thought you might be interested in buying their male
enhancement pills so they decided to send you the reminder!

So hope this helps but if you are on a hotmail/live account then let me
know as I might have the solution for you especially if you are using
Windows Live Mail which has a serious bug to delete your "Rules for
sorting your incoming mail" and also to create a "Safe List" when you
didn't want any. this problem is in WLM 14 on XP systems.

Yes. And also decreases. Spam ebbs and flows like the tides, but appears to
have no causal connection with changes in software version. More like
changes in the fortunes of the spammers, as their 'botnets get shut down,
and they rebuild them.

Thank you both; I am using Windows Live Mail 2009 to receive my mail from
hotmail and it is in there that the junk emails are downloaded.
I know that IE9 cannot generate or contribute to the amount of spam. I was
just saying that I had done nothing different from any other day except
install it. I never go to dubious sites or anything that I think could
cause me problems.
Anyway as Norman says the volume seems to come and go; what surprised me was
the jump from around 25 per day to 150, however it seems to have settled a
bit again and so far only 30 in to-day.
Thanks again.

Fyi....the Hotmail web filter takes precedent for any Hotmail account setup
in WLM. Check your settings for the account in the web UI.

In WLM....Pop3 configuration of Hotmail only downloads the Inbox, where as
DeltaSync configuration mirrors all web folders.
- if using pop3 in WLM, very likely that more spam is present in the online
Junk folder.

Check your safe senders and ensure you haven't Safe Listed your own email
address. Spammers falsify the headers and in some cases with the recipient
address, thus safe listing yourself (or adding your own email address to
your contacts-since contacts can be treated as safe) may impact delivery of
spam (falsely from you). It's also possible that a contacts address book
was harvested or their email address harvested and falsely originating from
a contact....the list goes on...

Thanks again; in the past I have tried using filters to block spam but found
there was a problem with that.
What I did when I changed my ISP about 4 years ago was to set up 2 email
addresses and restrict one solely for friends, it has never had one item of
spam over the 4 year period.
The one using Hotmail is used by me for business (in a very loose sense)
purposes and for new acquaintances, for example Amazon, ferry companies,
cruise lines and so on.
If I set the filter too high in this account then there is a risk hat I
shall lose emails from people I need to contact. About a month ago an email
from a car park I had booked went into junk mail and I had to ask them to
send me a copy of the email.
To conclude, I really do not think that I can set up a safe senders list in
my hotmail account. As I said, it appears to have settled down again to
around 30 or so.
Thanks you

There's only two option for the Junk Mail filter in Hotmail
Standard - Most junk email is sent to the junk email folder.
Exclusive - Everything is sent to the junk email folder except messages
from your contacts and safe senders, Windows Live Hotmail service
announcements, and alerts that you signed up for.

The 'Low' feature was removed quite some time ago.

Junk Mail is retained for about a week and a half in the Homtail web UI
junk folder
- if using pop3 in an email client to retrieve a Hotmail account messages
then visiting the web UI on a regular basis is the only route to ensure
anything filtered to the web Junk folder (which can be anything reported
and validated as suspicious, known junk, and/or messages with links/hmtl
content that might be deemed as unsafe) is moved to the Inbox for
download.....the alternative is to configure the account using the
DeltaSync protocol (in WLM or Outlook [with the Outlook Connector]) which
will mirror the all web folders (including the Junk folder) allowing one to
view the Junk folder content in their local email client and determine if
an important message (e.g. car park booking) got sidetracked.
