just one solution to update

This was the solution for my problems to update and instal critical updates
especially if your updates refer to office 2003

The problem!! For Windows XP SP2 System but might also apply to Vista

My friend tells me that his computer is running really slow and everytime he
shuts down it first tries to install windows updates.

I ran a few anti malware programs and AVG including the root-kit but the
computer came out clean

About a month ago I had set his computer to download and install the
Microsoft Window updates automatically.

The reason it tries to install the updates each time he shuts down is that
they have failed to install on the previous attempt. (This means it will
take up to an hour before it switches off and by checking history the
installs failed)

When using the computer I notice that when using Task Manager it shows
100%CPU usage when it is trying to download the window updates. (Means all
other programs are very slow or even freeze). As soon as I end
the process showing 100% against.. svchost.....System.... The update
download or the install of the updates stops and the computer will begin to
work normally. I have tried to download
the updates manually but through the update site but with no joy (the green
cursor continues to run).

I have now switched off the automatic updates and the computer seems to work
normally although this isn't an ideal solution.

Now the solutions from members of this site (Clancy Wiggum) which worked for
me and mean't I was again able to turn on the automatic updates

First the download problem

This requires 2 fixes (both becoming available from Microsoft as an update!!
in MAY/JUNE)

While Microsoft Updates are disabled :

Download the Update for Windows XP (927891) package now.


Then, restart.

(which is WSUS version 3.0 client program)

Install, then reboot. May take 2x reboot.

This is a very controversial issue for Microsoft, in fact - if you
call them and explain it they will immediately ask to remote into your
machine and look at logs.


Now for the installs of the updates to Office 2003

1) Make sure the Office Source Engine is set to manual in the service

Your kidding right? How much is Microsoft going to pay me for all this
hassle? I want them to pay me for each and every minute I spend straightening
out their issues, I don't work for free. I will NEVER buy a Microsoft product
agan ever, and neither will my friends, family or co-workers, and when ever I
am at an electronics store, I will chase people away from the windows PCs
