After installing the latest kb867801, on my windows ME system I can't create
a folder and name one in explorer. I can't create a folder on the desktop
and the "New" folder etc-etc is missing in explorer. I cant save to a
specified new directory and the "new folder button does not work. Anyone
have a suggestion for this? Thanks in advance. Frank

PaPa SmUrF,

Uninstall the update from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Does that resolve the issue ?
To reinstall it and determine if it was the update that caused the
issue, download it from the links supplied on the page for the
version of IE installed on the system and save it to the Hard Drive:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-025.mspx

Close IE. Delete the Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History
by opening Internet Options in the Control Panel. Temporarily
disable your antivirus program . Install the update. ( You can also
install it from Safe Mode to ensure that no program running in the
background is causing the issue . )
When the update has installed and the required rebooting finished,
reenable the AV if you've chosen to temp disable it.

Which antivirus program are you using and was it running in the
background when you downloaded and installed the update ?

Yes, I uninstalled it and the problem was still there. I then reinstalled it
from the link but to no avail. I also noticed that the "thumbnail" option is
gone from the views button as well as the New folder option in explorer. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. Frank

I had the same problem with Win98SE. I had to reinstall IE6 to fix it.
Then I scanned for updates and installed everything except kb867801.
I'm going to go without it until I find a solution.

Take care,

Frank,

Uninstall the update. Boot to Safe Mode and run the Repair Tool for
Internet Explorer :

How to Start a Windows 98-Based Computer in Safe Mode

Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177

Again, which antivirus program are you using and was it running in
the background when you downloaded and installed the update ?

Babson, did you have to uninstall internet explorer first to be able to
reinstall? I tried reinstalling it but it wouldn't let me. I then tried to
install it from the directory where it saved it's self to when I first
installed it but it said it didn't have the correct files. Thanks in
advance, Frank

Check the Fix IE Log.txt for clues. (Why couldn't it be repaired?)
Often it means that some modules have failed the verification phase.
So a possible solution would be replacing them so they pass the
verification phase and allow the repair to continue.

I just reinstalled over the existing files. I have all the install files
saved on disc. ie6setup.exe and a bunch of .cab files. If your setup uses
the internet to install it may not work. If you get to a menu that says
Install Now or Install Minimal, choose Minimal. Click on Internet Explorer
6 Web Browser and click next. Then click Reinstall all components.
I'm no expert so you may need to go to http://support.microsoft.com/ for
more info on installing or removing IE6.

Good Luck,
Bobson

It stated that it could not repair IE because a version of thumbvw was
5.50.4134.100 and needed to be 5.50.4134.600 or newer to be able to repair
IE. Any idea's? I found a newer versin of that dll but after I copied over
the old one it reverted back after I rebooted. Thanks in advance, Frank
