When I install this update through automatic updates it will download but
when trying to install it says that "An error occurred while copying file
spmsg.dll. Cannot copy file to destination directory" . When I click ignore
it pulls up a browse box to go find it and states "Ensure the location
specified is correct and insert the Windows XP Hotfix Source files in the
box." I am not sure where the hotfix soure files are.

Bev,

Show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp

Navigate to WINDOWS\system32\PreInstall
Open PreInstall
Open the WinSE folder and then the wxp_x86_xxxx_v1 folder [the x's are
different on each system]
Is there a spmsg.dll.ref file present ?

If PreInstall is NOT a folder, just a file, then rename it to
PreInstall.old.
Now try to install SP2.

wxp_x86_xxxx_v1 IS A FILE NOT A FOLDER. i HAVE A PREINSTALL FOLDER NOT A
FILE. I AM STILL UNABLE TO DO WINDOWS UPDATES DUE TO THE SPMSG.DLL FILE NOT
BEING ABLE TO BE COPIED.

ANY OTHER IDEAS?

Ouch ... please turn off the caps, Bev.
Right click the wxp_x86_xxxx_v1 *file* [ that's what you stated it was,
not a *folder*] and choose Rename.
Name it wxp_x86_xxxx_v1.OLD
Now try the installation of SP2, please.

Sorry I did not realize having the caps was screaming. Renaming the
wxp_x86_xxxx_v1 to wxp_x86_xxxx_v1.old worked great.

Thanks so much.
