KB 916281 causes serious problem

Our bookkeeper downloaded 7 Windows Update on Monday (6/19). After the
update, her computer was a mess. Every time the computer reboots, "Windows
Genuine Advantage Notification" error message pops up. When I try to open
Internet Explorer, error message of "encountering a problem" pops up and IE
never can be opened. I keep getting Office Watson errors. Integer overflow
errors from other applications. I scanned for virus and spyware and found
nothing. I tried downloading IE7 and it failed to install. Finally I used
System Restore and went back to 6/12 before the updates. Then the computer
worked normal again.

I then tried downloading one Windows Update at once. Only KB 916281 causes
IE to crash and all the error messages to pop up. Computer acts normal with
other updates. Except that Quickbook cannot be opened either!

This computer was running Windows 98. Then our company bought volume
licensing copies of XP Pro XP2.

Please let me know if there is a way I can install KB 916281 without making
the computer unworkable. Thank you!

I forgot to write...The computer has been running Win XP Pro XP2 using the
VLK for several months.

WGAN diag. tool says the product key is genuine.

And Quickbook 2006 is on that computer.

There have been reported failed installations of 916281 caused by
third-party anti-virus, anti-malware (e.g. SpySweeper), or firewall
products. Please disable all such third-party products. If you need a
firewall, enable Windows Firewall. Then try running the 916281 update
again. Does that solve your problem? Please report back.

The WGA Notification false positive is a different problem, usually caused
by a failed installation of update 905474. Usually this can be solved by
downloading and installing:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d496154544.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

This is a link to a later version of 905474 than currently offered by
Windows Update. Windows Update History will not include a record of this
manual installation, although earlier installation attempts for 905474 will
remain in History. The effect of installing this version manually is that
Windows Update will not offer 905474 again until the version offered by
Windows Update is more recent than this one.

There are other things that can cause the false positives (e.g. broken
cryptographic services in Windows), but try that download first.

I have no problem installing KB 916281. As I said, "after" I install KB
916281, the computer starts giving me error messages and IE crashes. I spent
hours today repairing Quickbooks to get it to run again. I totally
uninstalled Norton Internet Security. I disbaled Windows Firewall. There is
no antivirus/spyware/firewall software running. I have installed all updates
except 916281, and the computer works fine. Once I try install 916281 again,
I get the same problem and have to remove 916281 from the system.

So please let me describe what happens again...
The following error messages happen AFTER KB 916281 is installed:

* When Windoes reboots, before I do anything, Windows Genuine Advantage
Notification would display "WGAN has encountered a problem and needs to
close." Exception info: Code: 0xc0000005 Flags 0x00000000

* When I hit Internet Explorer icon, an error message pops up: IE has
encountered a problem and needs to close. Exception info: Code: 0xc0000005
Flags 0x00000000. After I close this error message, another error message
immediately pops up: "Office Watson: dwwin.exe The Exception Integer
overflow (0xc0000095) occured in the application at location 0x7726c22c"

I have KB905474 installed and I do not think it is the problem. Somehow
916281 is not agreeing with this computer. Please shed some light as to how
I can install 916281 without getting IE crashed with all those error messages.

Thank you.

Update 916281 has not had this effect on any of the PCs I have applied it
to, I am inclined to suspect that something is wrong with the Windows
installation on this PC. If it were my PC, I would now consider doing a
"Repair" re-installation of Windows from the original system installation
CD-ROM, and then re-applying Service Pack 2 and all updates since.

Dear Robin,

Thank you for your suggestion.

I performed Repair Installation to the computer, then I installed 42 updates
not counting 916281. However, I am still faced with the same problem. With
the 42 updates the computer runs fine. Once I install 916281, computer
starts giving me the error messages and IE crashes. After I uninstall
916281, computer returns normal. I still have not installed any anti
virus/spyware/firewall program to the computer.

Will it be OK if the computer does not have KB 916281?

The problem is that, without 916281, you are without protection against the
latest set of vulnerabilities that have been found.

The scenario you have is very strange. I wonder, are there any IE
extensions on your PC that are reacting badly to the new set of fixes? In
IE, pull down Tools, select "Manage Add-ons", select Show "Add-ons that have
been used by Internet Explorer", and then Disable every one except Microsoft
ones. Close all IE Windows and then try installing update 916281 again.
Does the system now behave properly, or does it misbehave as you describe
above? If the system is now well-behaved, you can try re-enabling the IE
Add-ons one by one (closing IE and re-opening each time) until you find the
one which is going bad.

Which error messages and IE crashes concrete? Have a look into the
Event Viewer (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc) please.

Additionally, which IE "extensions" aka AddOns do you have installed?
Have a look into the Internet Options -> Programs -> Manage Add-Ons

No.

Dear LII,

I have been having the same trouble with this update. This is an internet
explorer update. I started having problems with the browser generating errosr
and then shutting down when I went to www.msn.com and clicking on White
Pages. It was a strange thing. I double checked the update and when I
uninstall it my browser works fine. Isn't it ironic, the updates are to keep
someone from taking over some part of our computer and with the update
Microsoft has. Which is the lesser of two evils? You install the update and
some programs become worthless or you remove the update and become
potentially vulnerable to a hacker. But how vulnerable are we? That is the
question.

Thank you Robin and Freudi for the suggestion.

It's toward the end of Friday when I tried the disabling all the AddOns
approach.

Unfortunately, even after disabling all AddOns (including the Microsoft
ones), KB 916281 still gave me the same problem.

So I removed 916281 once again and downloaded Internet Explorer 7. Well
after I installed IE 7, I no longer got the Update notification for 916281.
I guess IE 7 addressed the problem as the 916281 did to IE 6 ?? After
testing all the programs, I left the office for the week.

I asked the bookkeeper about the computer this morning. She was the actual
user for this computer. She said IE 7 worked great and she had not
experienced any trouble yet. (Any reward for saying good things about IE 7?
:P)

I did not see Freudi's post until today. I will try the Event Viewer
approach later this week when I have time.

TO Fuserink:
Thank you for your post. It's nice to know that I am not the only one
having this problem. I also find it ironic that the "patch" make the
program that it's supposed to fix unusable. But I guess it only happens to
very few users. What a way to push me to install IE 7! (even though I was
thinking about switching to Firefox lol)
