KB 921896 downloads over and over

Windows update continues to download this package over and over.
There are no error messages, so it appears as if this installs
correctly. I use Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2007 (free
version).

When I look at the hotfix log file (Program FIles/ Microsoft SQL
Server/90/Setup Bootstrap/Log/Hotfix/), it says "No qualifying
products were found which can be serviced by this package." If that's
true, then how do I get it to stop downloading?

I have exact same problem with update KB927978 downloading 27 times since
March 18. It will not go away. Bulletin MS06-071 Security Update addresses
KB927978 fix but I am afraid to try this on my own. I am hoping this is not
the death knell sounding for Win XP.

Thanks for the link, MowGreen. However, this solution does not work
for me. When I look at the list of programs installed, in order to
remove KB921896, it is not there. From what I can gather from the
message in the Hotfix log, it seems that when it tries to do the
install, it decides that it is not appropriate, and so doesn't
install. (Message is "No qualifying products were found which can be
serviced by this package.") But then it keeps downloading it, as if
it is necessary. Everything is legit, and registered. Any ideas?

Thanks:

hello, i had this problem too. there is a registry key for the tools
althrough there are no tools installed, maybe if you had installed
tools and removed them later. the installer sees tools to update - in
the installation process he recognizes there are no tools - and does
nothing !!! - the installer leaves the old version numbers ! maybe it
is a solution to delete the whole tools key,but i could not test this
(it is a production machine)

here is my solution:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools
\Setup\Version => 9.2.3042.00
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools
\Setup\PatchLevel => 9.2.3042

Download the update and install it manually. You WILL need the original
install CD.
