Hi,

I have the following problem with Win XP SP2 Home:

I installed all November Patches (8) by visiting Microsoft Update manually.
All were downloaded and installed. After rebooting, the yellow shield and the
bubble appear and say that new updates are available.. it is KB923980. It
wants to be downloaded and installed ever and ever again, although
Systemsteuerung-Software says it is already installed.

I tried to uninstall it - did not help.
I tried to download and install it separately - did not help.

I even recovered a complete system backup (using Drive Image) from last
sunday, to get a "clean" system again. Did not help either.

Crazy-Chris,

Open the KB923980.log that is located in the WINDOWS directory (folder)
and copy&paste the last 2 *sections* into your reply, please.
If there have been repeated attempts at installing the update, then the
log will grow in size. PLEASE, post the last 2 sections of the log only.
The sections are divided by ==========================================
Also, uninstall KB923980 from Add/Remove Programs for now.
When you're prompted to reinstall the update, uncheck the box next to it
and then put a check in the box that says " Do not notify me of this
update again ".
If you downloaded it manually, good. Just save the file and we'll get it
installed, somehow

Okay, I just added the last two sections of the log-File at the end of this
posting.

Uninstalling KB923980 is hard, because of dependencies to 3 other updates:
KB924270
KB927977
KB927978

Shall I continue uninstalling either ?

KB923980 is driving me up the wall, it is shown in my history as installed 5
times over the past few days, today auto updates kept on installing it over &
over. I then uninstalled it, had to reboot, updated again (turned off
automatic updates). Ran update again once again it was listed so I ticked the
box to hide the update & was given a warning which for the time being I am
ignoring.

Don't concern yourself with the message or the other updates.
By the looks of the second part of the log it appears as though the
update has successfully installed.
Is it listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel ?
Are any Novell products (ex: Word Perfect) installed ?

Suggest you check the registry to see if it is listed correctly.
Go to Start > Run > type in

regedit
Click OK

Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows XP\SP3\KB923980
Click the plus sign next to KB923980 then click the plus sign next to
Filelist.
Click on each folder to see what files are now showing in the right
frame. These are the files that should be listed and they should all be
version 5.1.2600.3015

Nwapi32.dll
Nwprovau.dll
Nwrdr.sys
Nwwks.dll

Finally, open the Services console by going to Start > Run > type in

services.msc
Click OK
Click the plus sign next to Services and Applications
Click on Services
Look in the right frame for " Client Service for NetWare "
Is it listed, is it Started, and what is the Startup type set to ?

Sorry to butt in, but I'm having the same problem with the update
constantly being listed...

The update is listed in Add/Remove and have tried installing from safe
mode. I have WordPerfect Office 2000 installed, but can't find
anything referring to NetWare in services.msc (a workaround for the
patch that I found mentioned removing from properties for the
connection, but can't find it there either). From what little toying I
did, nwprovau.dll does get updated after the patch, nwapi32.dll does
not, and I don't have nwwks.dll in system32 at all. I'm posting the
reg export of the key you mentioned below... it seems to show only
nwprovau.dll as getting placed in system32.
