KB 925672 Reoffered As A Hidden Update This Time.

KB925672 was repeatedly reoffered. I kept KB925672 as a hidden update until
I Applied MowGreen’s solution and the steps that MVP Torgeir Bakken
recommended. It seemed to have worked.

Last month KB925672 reappeared but this time as a hidden update. I followed
the same procedure as above. Again it seemed to have worked.

Now 1 month later KB925672 reappeared again as a hidden update.

Any suggestions?

Serge,

I'm not quite clear on what you've posted.

Is KB925672 being reoffered via Automatic Updates or is it being
reoffered at Windows/Microsoft Update ?
If it's a 'hidden update' then it won't be reoffered.
Make that, *shouldn't* be reoffered. <w>

From the MSXML 3.0 SP7 release notes:

What printer software is installed ? That's the most likely culprit in
regards to OLDER versions of MSXML 3 being present on the system and the
update being continually reoffered even though it's been hidden.

I have Automatic Updates set up as: “Notify me but don’t automatically
download or install them”.

Twice on the same day the Yellow Shield appeared at the bottom of my screen.
When I placed the pointer on the shield I was informed that I had updates
for download. Each time I double clicked on the Shield, nothing seemed to
happen.
After awhile the shield would disappear. I reviewed update history; there
was no sign of failure.

I then went to Microsoft Update clicked on Express and after the searching
was over I was informed that I had Hidden Updates. I never had any hidden
updates before that. The hidden update was KB 925672. It is still hidden.

I did the above entry as you suggested and it was successful.

Brother MFC 215 Software is installed.

Now, what do I do with the hidden update KB 925672? Start all over again?

If KB925672 is still not being reoffered and is showing as Hidden at
Microsoft Update, then that's 'expected behavior'.
It will always show as Hidden.
Give this a shot, Serge ... navigate to
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
and
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache
Delete all contents of both folders
Then download the latest version of the Windows Update Agent and save it:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe
Download KB927891 and save it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A

Close the browser and any other open programs.
Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Then install WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe
Restart the system
Does the yellow icon appear now ?

I downloaded those two files and saved them. I then navigated to
Windows\softwareDistribution\Download and
Windows\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache.

After reading: "These files are used by the operating system and various
program. Editing or modifying them could damage your system." I just could
not bring myself to delete the contents of those two folders...yes, I got
cold feet.

Can you tell me why the contents of those files have to be deleted? Will
those two downloads be replacements? I am completly in the dark here. I am
just trying to learn.

As long as KB925672 is hidden there is obviously no yellow icon. When I get
enough nerves to do what you tell me, what do I do with KB925672 or will the
matter take care of itself?

There is *NO* reason to delete the contents of
SoftwareDistibution\Download nor SoftwareDistibution\EventCache if the
update is *NOT* being reoffered, Serge.
The only reason one would delete the contents of the subfolders is if
there is corruption of the binaries.

Suggest you install the 2 updates recommended previously in the order
listed and then restart the system and be done with this. <w>

I downloaded those two updates and installed them. I went to Microsoft
update and did a search.

I was offered KB925672 as a hidden update. Tried again same answer. On the
third try I was offered KB925672 as a hidden update and KB927978 as a high
priority update.

I decided to install KB927978 and KB925672 and apply what I now call the
MowGreen solution.

I installed KB92978 and then restarted the computer. Before doing anything
with KB925672 I went back to Microsoft Update, click on express for new
updates. Not only was I not offered any new updates but there was also no
hidden updates on offer. Tried a second and a third time with same results.

No use to say that I did not apply the MowGreen solution. Problem seems to
be solved…The yellow Icon is nowhere to be seen and I hope it stays that way.

Thank you for all your trouble and advice, much appreciated.

WTG, Serge. It appears that KB929798 is finally fixed <w>. Or, the
latest version of the Windows Update Agent does a better job at
detecting needed updates then the previous version did.
Glad to hear that we can finally put this matter to rest.
As always, it's a pleasure working with you.
