i have read all the threads on this problem, and tried all the solutions
suggested.

i tried all the steps at:
http://mowgreen.castlecops.com/archi...5672_repe.html

*******
Add/Remove Programs shows no KB977978... so can not remove it.

Add/Remove Programs shows only "MSXML4 Parser" as installed.

Cannot find $NtUninstallKB927978$ or $NtUninstallKB925672$ in any directories.

Downloaded msxml.msi, ran it... did not get the option to "remove"... tried
to install... received the error: "Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\classes;Msxml2.DOM Document.4.0\CLSID. Verify
that you have sufficent access to that key...."

Downloaded msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe, ran it... did not get the option to
"remove" ... tried to install... received the same error.

Checked permissions... appear to have total access...
**********
Am running McAfee Security Center 7.2, Build 7.2.147
Am running SpySweeper Version 5.3.1.2344 with all shields active.
*********
I am stumped... I know you are all probably tired of this issue... but, I do
not know how to proceed. I am living abroad and have not been able to find a
tech who can solve the problem.

I can provide the most recent log from a failed installation... or whatever
portion is required.

Thank you for your help.
Chris

This registry subkey does NOT have the required Permissions for the
msxml.msi to install the MSXML 4 SP2 package.
Strongly suspect that SpySweeper is 'protecting' the registry.
Can you TOTALLY, temporarily disable SpySweeper from any monitoring of
the system?
If not, you will have to use the registry editor to ensure the proper
Permissions can be set.
Right click this subkey and choose Permissions

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocu ment.4.0\CLSID

Administrator and System *must* have Full Control and Read permissions.
If you were able to set the perms as above, then open Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall 'MSXML4 Parser' and then
restart the system.

After the system restarts, run the msxml.msi to get MSXML 4.0 SP2
installed. If prompted to, restart once more.
Now install the update, KB927978, msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe.

Did that resolve the issue ?

Thank you, MowGreen, for your prompt reply to my inquiry.

I uninstalled SpySweeper... still no success with KB 927978 install.
Turned off SystemGuard in McAfee... ditto.
Uninstalled RegCure ... ditto.

Used regedit.exe, went to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocu ment.4.0\CLSID
but the only item listed under "Permissions" is the Administrator... no
entry for SYSTEM.

Explored back up the tree... no SYSTEM option available at "Classes" (only
entry for Permissions is "Everyone")... SYSTEM as Permssions option does
become available further up the tree at SOFTWARE...

How do I give the specific key SYSTEM permissions? The other postings that
mention this registry edit seem to imply that SYSTEM should be an option for
that specific key?...

Is it safe to select SYSTEM at the SOFTWARE level and then select the
"Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that
apply to child objects." ? Will this give the specific key under
SOFTWARE/Classes/... the correct permissions? If this is the answer... what
are the repercussions to all the 'child objects' below SOFTWARE?

I am hesitant to edit the registry without further guidance.
Thank you.
Chris

DO NOT change any Permissions except at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocu ment.4.0\CLSID

Open the registry editor and navigate to that subkey
Right click CLSID and choose Permissions
Click the Add button and then the Advanced button at the bottom left
[ The ' Select this object type ' window should show Users, Groups, or
Built-in security principals ]

Click the Find Now button
In the bottom window scroll down to System, click on it to highlight it,
then click the OK button
Click OK once more
Now make sure that Full Control and Read are checked for System.
Close the registry editor
Restart the system afterwards to ensure the change sticks, please.

Did you already uninstall MSXML4 Parser ? If so, then proceed with the
installation of MSXML 4.0 SP2, and then apply the update, KB927978
