KB-944338 Error Code: 0x8007F0F4 after repeated attempts to install through
Microsoft Update or automatic updates. Win XP SP-2, IE-7 is installed. Odd
thing is that I have automatic updates configured to "download and let me
know when updates are ready to install" and it's trying to push it through as
automatic. I always used this setting and changing it make no difference.
This is a VB Script vulnerability update.

Apparently either the installation of IE7 did not install the proper
versions of jscript and vbscript.dll or somehow the files were later
reverted to a lower Version level.
Download, *save*, close all browsers/programs/applications, and then
install Windows Script 5.7:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Doing so will mitigate the vulnerabilities patched by KB944338 as
Windows Script 5.7 is not affected:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-022 – Critical
Vulnerability in VBScript and JScript Scripting Engines Could Allow
Remote Code Execution (944338)

It just came to my attention that so many install failures had hppened that there was an issue somewhere.

1. Install Windows Script 5.7:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...6-524e7e844d81

2. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications active (running) when you
installed IE7?

Answer to question #2:
Anti-virus is McAfee Enterprize 8.5 (I have a SMB Network)
Third party firewall is Zone-alarm Pro
And the last is yes-McAfee and Zone Alarm Pro, although I've been running
IE-7 since the Beta version, so I've been using it for quite a while and keep
it updated, have never had much trouble with it.

Ah, thanks! I assume installing Windows Script 5.7 has resolved the
problem.

McAfee VirusScan, CounterSpy, and ZA Pro all should have been disabled prior
to installing IE7 (any version). The fact that they weren't is probably why
Windows Script 5.7 wasn't installed along with IE7, Dave. These
applications (and others) can disallow (some or all) changes such installs
need to make. This applies to installation of Windows Updates, too.

I do NOT think it's necessary to uninstall/reinstall IE7, Dave. However, I
would recommend temporarily disabling CounterSpy before attempting to
install any updates; If need be, considering temporarily disabling McAfee
VirusScan and ZA Pro, too.

NB: Anytime you disable ZA Pro, make sure you then enable the Windows
Firewall. The machine should NOT be connected to the internet without an
active firewall!
