Please excuse my previous post, I used the wrong update number.

The correct correct number is KB971657. I have tried to install this update
several times but I always get a configuration error and it reverts back. Is
there a fix for this problem?

Don,

Either post the KB971657.log, which is located in WINDOWS, so that we
can hopefully, determine why the update is failing to install or:

" How to obtain help and support for this security update
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY
in the United States and Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. For more information about how to contact your local
Microsoft subsidiary for support issues with security updates, visit the
Microsoft International Support Web site:

I haven't found a good response to this problem from Microsoft yet, just a
lot of side stepping. First of all in Vista Home Premium there is no KB log
file when this error occures, I see the results in a "WindowsUpdate.log"
file. Additionally, everybody seems to have the same problem. After the
reboot the update manager says there was an error, and undoes everything it
did, subsequently modifying the register. I have also downloaded the file
directly from the microsoft site to ensure it was not corrupt. So, how about
a straight answer for a COMMON problem that is affecting lots of people.
Thanks,

Have you contacted Microsoft about it? Details are provided in MowGreen's post,
quoted below.

(To preemptively address one common misconception, nobody on this newsgroup
works for Microsoft.)

The WindowsUpdate.log file is the log file for the Windows Update Agent. It
doesn't include useful diagnostics when the update itself fails. However, I'm
not certain how Vista logs update installations; we still use XP at my site.

You say you've downloaded the file directly from the Microsoft site; have you
tried installing it in Safe Mode? Failing that, I suggest you either contact
Microsoft as detailed below, or start a new thread here detailing your problem.
(Since we don't even know what operating system the original poster is
running, never mind whether your problem is the same or not, keeping the threads
separate helps us to avoid confusion.)

Harry.
