You followed this carefully:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/828026.htm
Do not skip anything.

Otherwise try this:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updtcl.htm

Be sure you are not skipping anything anywhere.
Skipping seemingly unnecessary steps is a common cause for failure.

I am running windows me. Windows Media Player is not shown in control panel
under windows setup. the only thing i could find was multimedia. If I click
details it show media player 1.0. I believe a have clear everything under
multimedia using your step. 828026 never shows up under the registry either.
I can't go to next step because I'm not running xp. Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Hold on......
You're running Win ME??
download, install, and run Belarc Advisor - www.belarc.com - which will tell
you the state of all your hotfixes (patches/updates).
Reinstall from the Windows Updates Catalog any which are shown to need it,
and then post back (after re-running Belarc, and getting the all-clear or
not)

Good Luck

OK I installed belarc advisor and followed steps like you said. Under
istalled microsoft hotfixes there are a few that are unmarked. they are as
followed:
s867460
q329414-25
q823718
kb870669
sp1
q834707
q837009
q317244
Notice that kb828026 is still not installing. is there any other info i need
to supply. I have forget to reinstall something after i installed my os? Was
I supposed to download something first then the other.

It may help if you were clearer about your objectives.
Are you mostly interested in installing this update or
are you just trying to understand why it won't install under WU?

If you only care about the update try first of all checking
if you really need it. E.g. perhaps you already have it
or one which supersedes it or perhaps you don't have
the necessary pre-requisites. The KB828026 article shows you
the versions of msdxm.ocx and wmpcore.dll to check for.
Notice the article implies a pre-requisite of having WMP 9, 7.1. or 6.4
already installed. What do you see if you start Windows Media Player
and use its Help, About command?

If it appears that you really need it try downloading and installing
it manually.

In either case if the update is actually running there may be some log
files which will give you some clues. One way to find them is simply
to search for files on your entire harddrive which contain the string 828026
(Don't limit your search to KB828026, the KB keyword.)

Finally, if the install of the update is failing you may find better
assistance in newsgroups which specialize in WMP or your OS.

Good luck

Hi,

This thread is several months old, so maybe this is moot for you, but here's
the answer:

I had the same problem, and it took me a long time to figure out the fix.

First, The advice at http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/828026.htm _might_ be
usefull to people with Windows XP but it was no help to me. (I'm running
Windows ME.)

I found some good advice on these newsgroups from "Smirnoff" who says:
1. Delete all copies of WMP.DLL (There should only be one, probably in
C:\Windows\system; If you're nervous about deleting files, back it up first,
or just rename it.)
2. Re-install Windows Media player. (I found if you just click on the
player icon after deleting WMP.DLL, it will automatically walk you thru
downloading a new copy from the web and reinstalling.)
3. Re-install 828026.

This is very good advice but VERY IMPORTANT: When you go back to Windows
update, install 828026 ONLY! Do not install any other updates at the same
time!

I went thru this routine, and when I went to Windows Update, it told me
there were two critical updates I needed: 828026 and 885492. Like a good
little sheep, I took the path of least resistence and let it install both.
This put my system back to where it was before, where Windows Update keeps
insisting that I need 828026 no matter how many times I install it!

What I've learned is:
Installing WMP9 installs version 9.0.0.2980 of WMP.dll
Patch 828026 upgrades this to version 9.0.0.3075.
Patch 885492 upgrades this to version 9.0.0.3250.

What I think happened to you, me, and a lot of other unfortunates is we
installed both patches to WMP9 at the same time -- becuase Windows Update
told us to. WU installed the second patch first. Then the first patch
failed because WMP.dll was then newer than the one it was trying to deliver.
However, it fails without any error message and tells you that it was
successfull. But then the next time you go back to WU, it sees that you
have WMP9 but you don't have the registry entry that shows that 828026 was
installed, so it just keeps trying....

"mTIE",

Thank you for providing this solution to our newsgroup. These tips are
vital to finding reproducible error conditions and forming robust solutions
to various Windows Update issues.

I'm new to Windows updates, and this KB 828026 problem is the first I've
encountered. It's been annoying me for a couple of weeks now. The ME fix
looks like it will work for me - but why don't Microsoft put details of the
problem/fix in the instructions or read-me info on KB828026 itself? The fix
has been around for over a month now.
