Hello:

I just spent the entire night rebuilding our windows 2000 server machine.
This is a clean machine with no internet activity before the updates.
Everything on the machine is known software and was the same as before.

However now I have downloaded and installed all of the updates except the
KB832483, it refuses to install. The update history shows that it installed
both from automatic and windows update sites. The update does not appear to
be installed however because it does not show in Add/Remove programs. I
never had this problem with this update before the rebuild.

I have searched the web for references to this issue. I find several from
when the update first came out everyone of them listed the problem but none
had a solution to the issue.

Does anyone know how I can fix this issue? I really need to get this machine
up and running before everyone comes in Monday morning. I also have another
2000 server to rebuild tonight as well hope it don't have the same issues.

Thanks
Vince

Hi Vince
I dont know for sure, but I think that not all updates show in Add/Remove.
I am sure I have some in my History in WU that do not show as I know I have
done a 'Search' in the past and have found them.
When I first updated Windows Mal Soft Remover KB890830 from WU, it did not
show in Add/Remove and never does.
I know its a Self-Extrac Cab but.....
Try a search - you never know.

You are correct there are updates that do not show in Add/Remove this may be
one of them but I am not at work now and can not check to see. But even if
it does not show in add remove it still does not explain why windows history
shows the program installed 5 times yet it keeps telling me to install it
again.

When I say again I mean right now. If you use auto updates and say ok to
download and install it will do so then the update icon will go away for
about 1 minute then it will come back and ask to download and install again.
I could do that all night and not get anywhere.

I spent about 12 hours redoing the machine now I am going to be bothered by
every darn employee that sees the and asks why won't it go away. I don't
want to have to be bothered for that I really need to get this in espically
since the machine holds a lot of client personal info.

Thanks

Alas, Vince, there have been a couple of reports re this continual desire
for this KB to want to be installed, but I could see no advice given - not
good news.
Mind you I seem to remember there were one or two other KBs that wanted to
be installed repeatedly.
I can only suggest this link to MS re general update problems.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910339

also have a look here

http://search.microsoft.com/results....-GB&q=KB832483

As a last resort, try a download to disk or desktop from the actual KB832483
page below - I would suggest after download, ensure system is clean from
'nasties' - disconnect from the net - disable antiV. Run and install from
disk or desktop.
This worked for me and others for the Aug updates - and I did July by same
method.
If it does install correctly and you still get the warning offer, I would go
to WU home page and stick the little bugger in the hidden folder - out of
sight and out of mind :-)

Do let us know what happens

P.S.
Black Tuesday is two days away :-( :-(

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832483/en-us and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915731/en-us and have a look into
the KB832483.log file to be found in the Windows/WINNT folder.

In case you don't get through, give the following a try:

Hello:

I have the issue under control and wanted to put up the answer incase
someone else reads this.

Today I was able to contact the development team for our company software.
When I explained the issue I was given the reason why this is happening.

Turns out that in the past when I downloaded the windows updates I got that
update before a newer version of our software come out. Our software
includes a newer version of the MDAC file than what windows is trying to
update to. This causes the update to fail but not really. It does try to
install but does not actually do anything. The first thing that tipped me
off was I downloaded the the stand alone update then tried to apply it. When
I did I got the notice that the file I had was newer than the file in the
update. It did not finish.

Turns out that somehow windows update can not determine that there is
actually a file on the machine newer than the available update so it just
keeps telling you to get it. I was told just to simply hide the update in
the windows update site.

I bring this up because it could happen to anyone that has a program that
updates MDAC within their files.

There is a work around for the next time I rebuild a 2000 machine and maybe
even an XP so I can get rid of this update and not have to hide it. That
work around is to make sure I update windows with KB832483 before I install
our company software. Then the software will override that file but windows
will not fight it because it was put in.

Can you be more specific with respect to "Turns out that somehow
windows update can not determine that there is actually a file on the
machine newer than the available update so it just keeps telling you to
get it. I was told just to simply hide the update in
the windows update site. "?

How does one "hide the update"? Thanks.

I also had this issue and the solution I found was to search for and download
the latest MDAC build, which at this time is MDAC 2.8 SP1. You can find it
here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

once I installed this and installed that KB patch again, it stuck and was
fine.
