(I finally resolved this, so this msg is just a post to anyone else who
is having the same problem. See end of msg.)
--------------------------------------------------
I have SP2 installed on my WinXP machine. Today I went to the MS
Windows Update site, and tried to install the latest patches, which I
believe are KB834707 and KB885884. (The former is described in
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-038.mspx)
After attempting the update, I get the ff. error msg at the
"Installation Summary" page:
The following updates failed to be installed successfully:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows
XP Service Pack 2 (KB834707)
Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2
(KB885884)
Error: There is not enough disk space to install the update(s).
Free additional space on your hard disk and then try again.
For more information about the failures, see the View
installation history page.
I have 5 gigs free, so the disk space error seems unlikely. But what is
really wierd is that I can't see the disk space msg ("Error: There is
not...then try again.") in IE--it only showed up when I copied and
pasted the text out of IE into this msg! Are they using invisible ink
:-? (There's not even room for those words: the slxn shows up in IE as
reverse video, with a dark blue background. There's only a thin sliver
of blue between "(KB885884)" and "For more information..."
The link to the "installation history page" does not show these two
updates.
---------------------------------------
Well, I think I finally got the first update above to install, so I'll
post this msg as info for anyone else who is having the problem. Since
the auto-install failed, I went to the page describing the first update,
namely:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-038.mspx
and picked out the version for my installation, which was:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
I then downloaded and installed that, and it apparently worked. It
wants me to reboot. After I've done so, I'll try the manual install
route for the other update (which is an Office update, so I don't know
the URL yet, but hopefully I can find it).
