Dave, not sure what is causing that, but how about some basic
troubleshooting?
First, boot with your Millennium StartUp diskette, then at the MS-DOS prompt
type "c:" (sans quotes) and press Enter. Then type:
scanreg /fix + Enter
When that completes, enter the same scanreg /fix command again and let it
finish.
Second, remove the floppy and boot back into Normal mode. Use Explorer to
locate the Win386.swp file, and verify that it is NOT set to Read Only in
the Attributes. Also, if you have customized the location of the .SWP file,
move it back to the default C:\Windows location for troubleshooting; you can
move it back to where you customized it later.
Third, Explore to the default Temp (and TMP if it exists) folders and remove
everything there. If you have things there you want to keep, move them to
another folder; otherwise just delete everything (and then empty the Recycle
Bin).
Fourth, search for a Hidden folder named WUTemp and delete the entire
folder.
Fifth, in the CP System/Performance/File System section, adjust the size of
your System Restore down to the minimum; Restart, then go back there and
adjust the size of the SR storage back to what you had it before. (that
last because of the Error you mentioned). On that same note, check the
amount of Free Space you have on your C: drive; if less than 10-15 percent
of the total size of the drive/partition, you need to delete to move some
files to create more free space on your hard drive.
Next, run a Full Scandisk on your C: drive.
Last, check Add&Remove Programs and if KB834707 is listed there, Remove it.
Restart one last time, then go back to WU and attempt to download/install
KB834707 again.
If you still see the same issues, try doing a Clean Boot in case something
is interfering. In case you haven't done that in a while, some tips here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;267288
If even that doesn't work, you may need to manually replace the files you
listed above. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;265371 if you need
tips on replacing protected files.
Then give Windows Update another try.
I know, quite a bit of stuff.

If your system continues to have those
errors after all the above, I suggest you post about the problem in the MS
public Windows Millennium newsgroup; the folks there may have further
insights into what could be causing the issue.
