Hi.

I am trying to have a user remotely install an update (KB834707) and it is
unsucessful.

After many attempts, I had the user download a copy of the program (away
from WinUpdates) and try to manually install it. However the user gets a
error stating that SHDOCVW.DLL file cannot be written. The user has Admin
privledges.

Can anyone help?

-Nick

Hi

If WinXP SP2 is installed (or someone has tried to install it), you
might have a incomplete SP2 installation.

In the KB article
"You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry
point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library
Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038 security update"
at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=888162

see

"Q1: I do not think my computer is in an "incomplete Windows XP SP2
state." How can I know for sure?"

If one of the two methods to check the SP2 installation indicates that
it is incomplete, you should uninstall SP2 and then install SP2 again
(that is also described in the KB article above).

I too am having problem with this update, it keeps showing up as critical
update but is sized as 0 KB. Further, it does not show up as an installation
failure. I have verified that my XP Pro SP2 installation is complete
