KB835732 failed to install

I run xp home on a dell dimension 2400 (2.3mhz, 256kb ram). For the longest
time I have ignored that I cannot install the above KB, but now that SP1 is
no longer supported, I figure I need to get it installed to move to SP2.
When the update screen tries the download, it shows already in my system, and
when it tried to install it fails with an error code of 0x05. Can someone
please lead me to the fix. A few hours of searching has led me to nothing
concrete

I'm in the same boat - this seems to be quite a pervasive problem.

My problem is similar to that of many others - I've loaded XP pro on a clean
install, got all the updates but Windows update does not recognize that
KB835732 is already installed. I think this is preventing me from dowloading
SP2. I've scowered probably every site now for about 3 hours...have tried
all the suggested fixes w/o avail....

I find it hard to believe that MS doesn't have a fix for this

Maddening isn't it?

My computer ws telling me I needed SP2, but the auto download was never
reaching it because of the previous failure. Having never found any decent
info on what to do, I ordered a SP2 disk from mircosoft, (free plus $3 in
shipping). It loaded correctly and the previous error went away, so now I am
happy again.

Yep same for me....Looks like we're following the same course - i originally
was turned off by the $3 shipping fee and was bent on fixing this myself -
but i broke down and ordered the CD right b4 this thread. glad its worked
out 4 u.
