Hi,

I had repeat critical update of KB837009 occuring, and have a list of
successful installs in my history as long as my arm. Actually, longer.

I tried a solution on this board to uninstall 823353, manually install
837009, then use windows update to install 823353. Unfortunately I cannot get
to this stage.

What happened is, I uninstalled 823353 fine, but when I try to install
manually 837009, I receive a pop up message :

"You are not authorized to view this page
You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the
credentials you supplied. "

I also tried to install 823353 manually, but same message. I then tried to
run windows update, but it detects no critical updates available.

Please can anyone help as I am completely stuck.
thanks,
martin

Be more specific. What did you do that caused that message?

One possible interpretation of your description is that you tried
going to the Windows Update Catalog and weren't recognized
as an Administrator.

In that case doing some of the module re-registrations listed here
may help:

<title>KB813444 - How to troubleshoot situations where you cannot
complete MSN sign-up or connect to SSL secured (128-Bit) Web sites
by using Internet Explorer in Windows XP</title>

For which OS? If NTx use MBSA to see what it thinks.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

.... which was a link shown in other threads I found here when searching
KB837009.

My OS is Windows Me.

Rather than leave my PC vulnerable, over the weekend I have uninstalled
Outlook Express and all of its updates, and reran windows update which
presented me with KB837009 which is now installed fine.

However, when I subsequently run windows update, it does not present any
other security updates, such as KB823353. Again, if I follow links such as
those above to install it manually, I get the same error page coming up (it
appears in a browser window when clicking download).

So once more I presume I still have an unsecure set up, and am effectively
back to square one. Should I follow your link above and try to do some of the
"module re-registrations" you mention (I havent a clue what this means but
will have a look and try to understand it if this is recommended action).

Hope this is info required, and you can help further. If more info required
then my apologies, I will provide if you can let me know, I simply havent a
clue about techie probs, and microsoft were of no help whatsoever when I
contacted them - unless I was willing to pay something like £49 for them to
solve it !

many thanks,
martin

After having upgraded to IE6 SP1, did you ever have occasion to reinstall
WinME? If so, did you first uninstall IE6 SP1?

Background: When it was released in Jul-04, KB823353 was offered to users of
Win9x (Win98 and WinME) by Windows Update. About 6 weeks later and for
reasons that remain a mystery to this day, KB823353 suddenly and without
notice was no longer offered to Win9x users and the FAQ section of
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-018.mspx was edited
to state that the vulnerabilities addressed by the update weren't considered
Critical in Win9x. Windows Update continues *not* to offer KB823353 to
those running Win9x machines.

Martin, look in OE Help > About > Files: What versions of MSOE.DLL and
INETCOMM.DLL are displayed here? If they are both v6.00.2800.1409, your OE
is fully up-to-date.
