I have a HP Pavilion 510n running Windows XP SP1
I have Automatic Updates Enabled
I went to the Update site Today and noticed that XPSP2 had been attempting
to download several days in a row to no avail. I checked for other updates
and got a long list of them, After installing them Immediatley after the
desktop loads my computer gives me the Blue Stop Screen. After several more
times of this I F8ed and Went back to previous settings which worked. After
several installs of the Various updates I have narrowed it down to KB840987.
I searched the previous posts here but nothing stated in them is helping
rectify my problem. I have tried disabling my antivirus etc upon installing
this particular update. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I have tried installing this update on two Dell Computers and my machines
have done the same thing. I am running W2K Professional SP4. I too had to
F8, go into the "Safe Mode" and remove updates one at a time. KB840987 was
definitely the culprit. I e-mailed Microsoft Support immediately after
finding this problem and have yet to receive a reply. I tried the update on
one machine two days ago and this the other today, same problem.

Good luck!!

I've been having the same problem it only appears to be happening on my
dell optiplex gx150's all the rest of the machines are fine. I've tried
updating all the drivers from both dell and intel but as soon as
KB840987 goes on blue screen:
0x0000007f
Unexpected_Kernel_mode_trap

I did some looking up on that error and there was an article about how
symantec antivirus may cause it so i removed it and no luck. I have also
found that on a few of the machines i also had to remove KB841533 before
the blue screen would stop.

I have seen the exact same thing. I believe with the new symantec
antivirus, you had to add a reg key to add additional stack space. But that
fix didn't work for us either. Removing the updates was the only thing that
helped with our gx150's.

Thanks

I've been able to solve this on my Dell GX150 machines by using Add/remove
programs to remove the Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver.
Plug-n-play then detects the missing driver and replaces it with a driver
which is a better match. Problem solved.\

Use Add/Remove instead of Device Manager to get a proper uninstall.
