KB840987 crashing Windows Server 2003

Installing update kb840987 causes BSOD on reboot: error is
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. My mother board has no cards installed and DVD
player is plugged right into the IDE bus, so hardware possibilities are slim.
I have updated the BIOS but no help. Any ideas?

You need to boot up into safe mode and remove the update KB840987, it should
also remove KB840533, it will boot back up normally after that.
