Is anyone having trouble with this update. After I do the update and reboot,
my computer starts loading and then stops after the logon process.

See my response to Victor with the subject line "Frozen Taskbar".
You need to turn off "reboot on error" and also do some research.

OK. I know it's something running at startup, because i can boot Win2K in
safe mode.

I had trouble with KB840987 today on my Win2K computer. Computer did
not restart after installing this update. I was forced to restart in
safe mode, and uninstall this update. After that Windows rebooted
normally. I spent 4 hours to solve this problem! Now I refuse to
install any Windows updates!

I have yet to see any official Microsoft release on why this is happening
(and a FIX FOR IT!). We have approximately 2,500 PCs here on campus and this
problem has happened to at least 50 Windows 2000 computers here. Most (if
not all) of them so far are Dell OptiPlex GX150 systems. Booting into safe
mode and uninstalling the patch works, but this is only temporary and very
time-consuming, so it obviously needs to be fixed ASAP.

FYI -

This problem is resolved by booting into safe mode, uninstalling the Intel
Ultra Storage Driver, rebooting into normal mode, installing the Intel
Chipset Software Installation Utility (if not already installed), rebooting
once more, installing the Intel Application Accelerator, and rebooting once
more. This has been verified on several systems on our campus and has worked
on every one we have tried it on so far.
