On my computer Windows XP Home Edition, service pack 1(KB842773) downloads
with no problem. It just won't install. I have tried every possible solution
suggested on this forum and others, and nothing has worked so far. Frankly, I
am getting tired of this. It is high time Microsoft acknowledged that this is
its problem, not our fault, the users. Please find out and tell us the
solution. Make it plain and simple, not the sort of gibeerish or computer
jargons that the so-called experts post here. Boy, I am now really regretting
not buying Apple computer. My friends who did don't experience these kinds of
problems.

Hi

Install it from here instead and see if that works better:

Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0
and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Alternatively, install WinXP SP 2 using the full SP2 installer
(instead of Windows Update).

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

If you do not have broadband at home, but you have at work or you have
friends that have it, you can download it there and burn it to a CD.

If you think that the download is to large, you can get the same
file on a CD from Microsoft.

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a SP2 installation, take a look here:

Also, before installing SP2, you should take a look at the

Hi,

I just experienced the same problem that you have after
thorough searching on previous posts I found this and it
worked for me...

1. try deleting the catroot32 directory under
windows/system32.
2. reboot your pc.
3. If you have downloaded KB842273 then run. Hit next and
you will notice the installation will progress.

By the time I wrote this e-mail it just worked for a while
ago. I have high hopes that this procedure will work for
as well. Cheers//Mark

I am having trouble with the same file. I get an installed successfully
message, but when I check for updates, the same file shows up as needing to
be installed. I have attempted downloading and installing directly and
installing SP2 but neither option has worked. I upgraded to XP pro from 2000
last night. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Debra

Please see if the following info helps.

Symptoms

* Same Updates are repeatedly offered thru Windows Update (WU)/Auto Update
(AU). After the user installs the update, WU/AU report that installation was
successful, but scanning again shows the same updates. This cycle repeats.
Reboot doesn't solve the problem.

* KB842773 (BITS 2.0 package) will most likely be listed as the update being
repeatedly offered because it is a mandatory update on WU V5 and hence will
be the 1st update to be detected/installed repeatedly

Problem

There are some viruses/Trojans that are on the internet which causes some
processes with exe name as update.exe to be killed immediately. When a
process is killed, the exit code of the process is controlled by the caller
which kills the process. If the exit code from the killed install process is
0, then AU assumes that the install was successful.

Because of this, AU shows that the install was successful even though the
install did not succeed. Since no files would have been modified, the
updates are re-detected again and shown to the users.

Examples of viruses that kill update.exe are

W32/Bagle.X =>
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/bagle_x.shtml

Backdoor.Assasin.10 =>
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...r.assasin.html

Resolution

* Clean-up the machine using some good anti-virus software that can detect
and delete these viruses/trojans. After that, attempt the installs again
using WU/AU.

Note: This should not be seen as me recommending anti-virus software for
cleaning up any viruses, because the only completely safe way of cleaning up
a machine is to clean-install from a clean source (usually original CD).
This is because you never know what happened to your machine during the time
the virus was infected.

* If you don't have anti-virus software, Microsoft provides free anti-virus
software that can be used for 1 year from

Thank you for your help. I have become increasingly suspicious of a virus,
due to the fact that I have been unable to run my antivirus software,
firewall, or open the registry. I think the safest things at this point is a
clean install. Thanks!
