KB842773 failed to install

For the first time I have just tried to update XP Pro box
(SP1) on the MS's new V5 update site. I have run the
Custom Install and it says I need "Update for Background
Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1
(KB842773)". However when I run the install it comes back
with "Updates were unable to be successfully installed".

The Windows Update Troubleshooter search page has nothing
on this problem. If it does, I can not find it, I really
wish MS would give up their search engine and let Google
do the searchs on their databases. So what am I to do? If
my guess is correct, this install is the back bone of
Automatic Updates services in XP Pro.

I would love to just run SP2 on this machine but some
critical software we run does not work when SP2 has been
applied.

If the install was executed there may be a log for it. E.g. KB842773.log
Try looking for clues about your problem. E.g. an error code
and its context.

However, because diagnostic information tends to be spread out
in various files, usually depending on the type of update, what I often
do is search my harddrive for readable files which contain the update
number (e.g. 842773). To make the search more specific I restrict
it to files which were changed on the same day as the update.
