Hi

when i install KB883939 (Cumulative Update for IE 6 SP1) it prevents Windows
Update from working properly. I get the error 0x80072F78.

To get round this i have to re-install IE6 SP1 which wipes out 4 or 5 other
updates, reinstall them and miss out KB883939.

I've also tried downloading it and installing it manually, but i still get
the same problem.

im running Windows 2000 SP4

Is this a known error?

Check the file size on the following files in the SYSTEM32 directory

MSXML3.DLL
MSXML3R.DLL

One or both of these files might be zero bytes, if so copy the existing file
from the DLLCACHE directory. We had about 20 machines with this exact
problem.

hi

i've checked the two files you've mentioned and they both have the same file
size.

You're using the web interface to newsgroups.
Try a search?

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...9ed&sloc=en-us

(web interface search for
0x80072F78
- filtered by Answered Questions
)

(Post by Torgeir Bakken (MVP) citing KB articles
836985 and 871260.)

However, that answer was given last September.
Let's see if there have been any significant additions since then:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...26c9bf9?hl=en&

(Google Groups search for
(0x80072F78 OR 80072F78) (MSFT OR MVP) group:microsoft.*
- sorted by date to try to capture current thinking
)

(Additional troubleshooting suggestions for this error code
by PA Bear [MVP] a couple of weeks ago.)

You can find more from each sample search
or by modifying the searches yourself.

Good luck

i dont like this statement in the support article

"RESOLUTION
Warning This workaround may make your computer or your network more
vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as
viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this
information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion.
Use this workaround at your own risk."

besides, why should this happen after installing a particular update? surely
its a problem with the update itself?

You've given an extract from KB836985?

That's to warn you that it's not a good idea not to have some
protection on your link. If this is NTx you can at least do port blocking.
With XPsp2 you should still be able to keep the internal firewall active.
Etc.

Evidently there is something new which some network monitors don't like.
If you want to diagnose it find out what diagnostics are available in those
products or trace the link to try to understand what part of the transaction
is being rejected.

However, notice that that is not what Torgeir was suggesting.
(I may have misrepresented that above)
Did you try the update rollup 871260?

Please disclose all pertinent details if you need help.
