Warning!!!!!!

This update (KB885835) may break your ability to log in to a network SMB
share that requires your login name and password.

We have been unable to login to our linux server "home" directories that
require "user" mode logins with passwords.

This problem was also seen on a windows XP home machine that require a
user+password to get into a networked W98 machine with a shared folder.

Once this single update was removed everything worked fine.

Microsoft needs to address this problem.

This is crazy the number of people who are having this problem. I'm having
the same problem after talking to some Tech Person? at Microsoft I was told
it was a problem with my laptop and to contact Dell or BT, even though when I
restored my to a earlier date the machine worked OK.

It's preposterous to suggest that the updates are OK and blame others, they
(Microsoft) released the updates and they should sort them out ASAP

1) To remove the update go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and look
for the update at the bottom of the list. It should be in the last 10 items,
Click on it then Click on remove and it will be removed and then it will
tell you it might effect some of the programs installed after the update.
Click ok. Then it will tell you to reboot. Do it.

2) At some point Microsoft will get the message that they must really test
their updates before release. This is a worse problem then having the obscure
security whole this fixes. Most business customers are behind a firewall .
Most customers are also using a SMB share to access network based data . A
smart IT person is going to require login/password access to control who can
get to this data. Breaking this mechanism with an update is just poor QA.

3) I called Microsoft Tech Support to report the problem and the person I
spoke to told me that it was probably our network setup or our server. WRONG
on both counts.

MICROSOFT NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am having similar problems logging in to a Windows 2000 Advanced Server
domain. I have to take my Windows XP SP2 PCs out of the autoupdate group
policy. If you are having trouble logging in, restart your PC and when the
keyboard lights flash tap the F8 key so the boot options appear. Select the
Boot to the last good configuration and that will rollback the updates. The
autoupdate will continue to try to update your Windows XP machine so you need
to disable it until a solution is found.
