I installed the above update with several of the other patches from
Microsoft. Or at least the installation history at the Microsoft update site
shows it was installed. I have been having some strange problems since the
updates and suspect this one might be the cause. When I shut down my
computer I get a box that shellicon hidden window is trying to close. It
usually won't respond and asks if I want to end now. Some of my programs are
acting "quirky" now. I went to add/remove in control panel to delete this
hotfix and it's not listed anywhere, which surprised me since the windows
site shows it was installed on my computer??? It also seems my cpu usage
keeps spiking up and down since these updates. Anyone else having problems
like this? How do I know if it actually was installed?? (XP home edition,
sp1)
Thanks,
ng

I'm having the same issue. It's good to know I haven't picked up a Trojan or
some other unsavory thing. I'm glad you've got some idea which update might
be the problem. I thought it started around the time I installed some
updates, but I didn't have a clue which one might be the culprit.

You were right about which update was causing the problem. I found it in
Add/Remove programs and uninstalled it and have not had the problem with the
ShellIcon Hidden Window message again. It's listed in Add/Remove Programs as
"Microsoft .Net Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903)."

I was wrong. Removing this particular update doesn't work. It didn't
happen for a few restarts and shutdowns, but it started up again. Even
removing all of the most recent updates didn't stop it. I don't know what
happened when the last updates were installed, but this didn't start until I
installed them, and I can't find anything in Microsoft's knowledge base that
addresses the issue of "ShellIconHiddenWindow."
