Hi Everyone:

Like a few other people have reported here, my PC continuously downloads,
and fails to install, hotfix KB886903. I've tried downloading and manually
installing .NET Framework 1.1 using the command

dotnetfx.exe /t:%temp% /c:"msiexec.exe /fvecms %temp%\netfx.msi"

....then manually installing KB886903, but the error still occurs.

I've turned on logging, and the following is the error message that's
reported:

Info 9006: This patch cannot be installed because it
requires Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack
1 (SP1). No Micrsooft .NET Framework 1.1 SP can be
detected on this computer. Please see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid-886903 for more
details.

Of course, 1.1 IS installed. And the given link does not provide any
details on how to resolve this problem.

Any ideas?

Brian

I'm having the same issue. It asks me to install the update every time I
shut down. VERY annoying. Plus I do a fair amount of ASP.NET development,
and I'm not fond of the idea of using software that has a known
vulnerability. I can't seem to find anywhere on the Internet where
Microsoft--or anyone--has addressed the issue.

I'm with ya'll. I've had this particular glitch since its initial release.
Have tried EVERY suggested fix, but to no avail. Microsoft: time to show
your true value. Step up and fix this!

Try this:

1. Use the Windows Installer Utility to clean up the install list
2. Reinstall .NET Framework 1.1
3. Reinstall .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 *
4. Install Hotfix

That seems to have worked for me. Note, for step (3) I had to rename a file
called "tmp4AD.tmp" to "tmp3.tmp" in order for the installation to continue.

Regards,
Brian
