This update tried to install several days ago. Since posting my original
message I found a solution using an item in PC Magazine's August 23 User to
User column. I stopped the "automatic updates" service in services.msc,
renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder in c"\windows, then restarted the
service.
Windows Update still shows the KB update as available for download but it is
no longer displaying any error messages either at shutdown or restart.
Previously it was showing the KB update as already downloaded but not
installed.
Thank you, though, for your suggestions.
