KB890175 Fails to Install, AutoUpdate, ManualUpdate and Manual DLo

This thread is the closest to the symptoms I am wrestling with trying to
install the KB890175 update for XP Pro. I have had no problems previously.
Nothing anyone tries or suggests is working. The branches.inf properties show
it is neither hidden nor read only (I even unchecked the Archive box for this
and all other files in the temporary directory, all to no avail). I am
burning up hours on this and am desperate for guidance. I had a similar error
on another machine in my home but just kept trying and it finally succeeded
(remember Einstein's definition of insanity: Keep trying the same thing
expecting different results; guess I'm certified mad, huh?). No such luck
with this machine, though.

Maybe someone can direct me to the appropriate checklist for removing the
update files from my computer so I can at least free up the drive space. I
suppose this will just have to be a security update I will have to live
without. I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

I sense Linux in my future.

Search across all your Local harddrives (e.g. press Win-F)
for the partial filename: 890175
and tell us what you have.

Assuming one of those files is KB890175.log browse it
with Notepad and look for clues about your failures.

Thank you for the reply! I re-ran the autoupdate and the following is the

It doesn't tell me anything I know how to use. Any suggestions. The missing
branches.inf file is reported with the manual download install when it see
the file in the directory and its attributes are clear, that is, not hidden
or read only. Thank you again. Woody

I think you may have to expand the patch package
to find out what commands are being issued at that label.
Then simulating them may give you a better clue about
the exact permissions which are needed to avoid this symptom.

Alternatively to take a stab at a solution, try some of the suggestions
that others have been given for other instances of "Access is denied"

http://groups-beta.google.com/groups...t=0&scoring=d&

(Google Groups search for
"access is denied" MVP OR MSFT group:microsoft.*.windowsupdate
- sorted by date
)

BTW when you tried installing this manually were you using
the real Administrator userid?

HTH

Thank you Robert. I am traveling (notel dialup link now) so I will explore
the access denied link you suggested. I have not been using the Administrator
login as I am the only user and have admin privileges, BUT I will try it when
I return home Tuesday or Wednesday. Look for a report then.

Best wishes, Woody(sails)
