Hello,

I've run and installed all the Windows Updates for my WindowsXP Pro
computer. But when I go back to Windows Update I find the above patch is
still there. I've tried installing this patch over and over. When I do it
appears to install without a problem but it doesn't go away in the Windows
Update list.

Any ideas?

Kol

If this is the "Windows Defender" update -- ditto. It's been happening to me
also. I, too, have XP Pro. I turned my Automatic Update off.

It's the same thing at the "Windows Update" website: it shows "successful"
install, but when I go thru the Windows Update process again, it shows that I
need the update.

Hey, Microsoft -- What gives?

-- TC.

If you are asking specifically about update 890859:

Download the installer manually and save to disk in a known directory,
starting with the correct link for your version of Windows on page:
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-018.mspx>

Then open a command prompt window, and navigate using the "cd" command to
the directory in which you saved the update. Then type the name of the
update executable, with the added parameter "/o", as in, for instance,

WindowsXP-KB890859-x86-ENU.exe /o

If you were not asking specifically about 890859, then please provide full
details of the update that is the problem, and your version of Windows.

Every day when I login I have the Windows Update prompting me to install it again. It doesn't show in control panel as installed but Windows update shows that it has been installed 20 times. Any suggestions... please anyone....

Yes, maybe you did install it at the command prompt, but did you use it with
parameter /o ? That is the essential part of the operation.

And please *disable* your virus scanner while you try to do this.
