I have a similar problem with a Win98 machine also, except it's the
KB888113 update doing that. KB891711 seemed to have installed
correctly on this machine.
Please forward a solution for Windows 98se, or confirm those other
instructions are worth a try.
Installed those 2 updates on many machines, and ran into this problem
on only one pc. Another crashed at Windows bootup until I disabled
KB891711. Thankfully I had already read about the potential problem
ahead of time.
Doesn't make me feel too comfortable trying to protect a network when
installing an update could crash a machine or a server.
I think Microsoft should re-think this whole Windows update process
and come out with another solution, like a hardware device or
something. Imagine explaining to a client that you crashed their hard
drive which was running perfectly after installing an update to
protect it better.
The current solution is a catch 22.
Thanks
