Yesterday I downloaded windows critical update KB891711 and today my PC is
slow.
I am on windows 98Se using Gateways mode 667 Pn ( 4 yeard old now)and 512
memory.
I did control/alt/delete to see if something new was running ,causing my PC
to crawl and I found this windows KB891711 always running..
I then went to msconfig to stop it from running at start up
and that created another problem causing explorer to not work
.. So I put KB891711 back into MSCONFIG.
What a mess ,,,what should I do ?

On March 9, 2005, a larger thread was started on this update. Several
posters there booted into "Safe Mode", then used the "Add/Remove Programs"
applet in the "Control Panel" to remove the update.

I visited that thread after installing, and removing the update. I probably
should have stopped the Kb891711 process before removing it; but I did use
the "Add/Remove Programs" approach, though I did not boot into "Safe Mode".

So far, my Window Me system doesn't seem to be suffering any further ill
effects. I suspect that, were I not using Mozilla browsers, I wouldn't
notice any problem at all. So far, problems seem to be related to having any
of the following software installed:

Mozilla browser suite (I have 1.7.5, but not the whole suite)
Firefox (I have 1.0.1)
Netscape (I have 7.2; the mail client caused a general lockup)

Others have reported problems with:

Zona Alarm (whether Free, or Pro, or which version I can not say)
Norton Antivirus (which version I can not say)

I did not try any of the other Norton applications (I am not running there
virus scanner) that I have. I did not try any other applications than the
Mozilla family of browsers/mail clients; well, I didn't try to launch
Thunderbird, but I suspect it would go blue screen, as well. There may be
other software affected, as well. For now, I will leave this patch alone.

I believe there is a bug in this update!!! It gave me fatal err0r 06
everytime i tried to get on the internet. Solution: get ride of kb891711 from
the Start Menu as follows: click START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, then SYSTEM
TOOLS, and SYSTEM INFORMATION. Click Tools, System Configuration Utility and
click the Startup tab. Scroll until you find kb891711 then uncheck it.
RESTART and you should be able to get to the internet ... good luck to all!!!

Everybody see post by "nothingspecial" below. Took me many hours plus $14 to
check with my ISP to verify that it was a Microsoft bug then to figure out
how to get around the bug. Good luck!

On the 9th I installed both KB888113 and KB891711 patches. My system
(Win98SE) is still operating normally, no slow-downs or BSODs.
From what you have listed I am running Firefox 1.0.1 and ZoneAlarm Pro
(Security Suite) 5.5.062.011, but no Mozilla, Netscape or Norton.

My PC is WinMe, ZA Free (5.5.062.011) hardware router/LAN, NAV 2002 updated.

After the two Mar 8 updates, and restart, I probably would have first experienced trouble
as soon as I used Moz 1.7.5.

But I use IE(6) for winupdate, and after Win's restarts, I sometimes winupdate again.

(I do this because in the past I have seen disagreements between winupdate and
winupdate as to what winupdate has successfully installed. :-) )

In most Moz attempts, I could only restart (powerup switch on case), while in most ie
attempts, the "BSON"/BSOD and Win3 style errors kept cycling.

------------------------
Might be interesting to see if shutting down ZA would prevent kb891711 problems, then
check if installing an older ZA would dodge the problems. Especially if ZA is most
commonly conflicting with kb891711, I expect the Zonelab people will solve this kb
trouble before MS does.

only 3 kb891711 posts. All jan 12,13 05 with XP's
http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/search?q=kb891711

------------------------

It's interesting to compare experiences.

Step One-Boot to safe mode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SAFE MODE STEP IS A
MUST!!!!!!

1. Restart the computer
2. while the PC restarts press and hold hown CTRL( but I had to use F8)
until the windows startup menu appears.
3. choose safe mode from the startup menu, and then press enter.
4. click start>Run
5. type"msconfig")without the quotation marks)and press enter
6. click startup tab and UNCHECK KB891711
7. click apply and ok and restart the computer.
8. . Check out the issue again, to see if this solved it .
9. It may be necessary to do more but this is what I am testing Now.

You can add to the list:
SecureFX (I have version 2.2.9)

It was while using SecureFX to upload files to a web site that I first ran
into the KB891711 problems on my Windows ME machine. I've experienced
freezeups, failure during startup, and more. I've unchecked KB891711 using
msconfig and everything's running OK now.

Pretty damn frustrating when a "fix" is the cause of all the problems.
