I have just installed Security Update for Windows Me (KB891711) and it all
went fine. But when I restarted the machine it would not load properly, when
it was almost loaded it just stopped. I could not do anything, other than
restart.

To get it working again I had to use System Restore.

Does anyone know what the probelm is? Any suggestions as to what to do to
intall the update?

Thanks

I have exactly the same problem on windows 98.

I also installed KB 888113 at the same time. The update loaded as usual. But
then on my next computer start up, My computer froze apparently trying to
load zone alarm. I had to use "go back" to get back before the update. Now
I'm unable to use windows update to update my machine

Hopefully somebody sees this and can help us.

Jim

Same problem. I solved it by rebooting the computer in Safe Mode and
Uninstalling the KB891711 update through Control Panel.

I'm back to where I was before that Security Update.

PS: It just occurred to me that people who don't have the ability to restore
their computers to a pre-"windows update" condition, will never be able to
report this problem over the internet. They are out there trying to get their
computers restarted. This could be a major disaster for lots of people...

....but, the best thing that ever happened to Linux?

These updates stopped my computer as well and caused the computer to shut
down, every time I tried to get it to start up. I thought that I was going to
have to wipe the hard drive, untill I managed to get "Go back" to wind my
computer back to a working state. I am pleased to see that it is not me but
something wrong in the Microsoft code that is obviously causing the problem.
Will Microsoft tell us when they fix it??????

On my 98SE it stopped any sites from loading, but all I did eas go into the
startup menu and uncheck the update and it seems almost back to normal. Still
should not have done this. Do they want these updates to run on startup in
order to work? There was another update in there also.

I have the exact same problem as Jim Ober. I installed both critical
security updates, KB88113 and KB891711. When my computer restarted, it froze
when it was trying to open my Zone Alarm firewall. I had to use my Gateway
computer's "Go Back" feature to revert my hard drive to a time period before
I downloaded the two Microsoft critical security updates. When I reverted my
hard drive I also lost a $50 downloaded software package that I had purchased
right after I installed the critical security updates. This problem may have
cost me $50 in a lost software package, plus I'm concerned about not being
able to install the critical security patches. Microsoft, please help!!

I had exactly the same problem with this update in Windows ME on an HP8775C,
except that I could not get System Restore to work on any of the backup
dates. So I started in Safe Mode and used the Run menu. I typed in
"msconfig" then unchecked the update so it would not load on start up. This
has more or less fixed the problem, except that the fonts and window
appearance seem to have changed. But at least I am running and on line.

Now I am deciding whether to uninstall the update (KB891711) and then
disconnect from Windows Update for awhile. Are there other updates tha are
also a part of the problem? What is the best thing to do?

Here is the error message code that pops up when the computer initially fails
to load:

06:0000:00000057

Then when you "hit any key to return" the error message code changes to:

OE:016E:BFF8E64B

Hope this helps. Is there a library where you can look up the meaning to
these messages?

The executable which comes with this update apparently patrols your PC to find
malicious cursors or other bad actors. Unfortunately, it does not work on
Windows Me/98 with a lot of applications software (particularly Firefox and
Mozilla) . The patch seems to work well on Win2000 Pro boxes which are loaded
with lots of imperfectly written apps software.

Perhaps Microsoft will fix the patch for Win 98/Me. However, Win 98 and Win Me
are pretty old and you are probably better off upgrading to 2000 or XP.

Anyhow, to fix Win Me without rolling back to a prior restore point:

In:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices

Delete the key:
"KB891711"="c:\\windows\\SYSTEM\\KB891711\\KB89171 1.EXE"
