This is a continuation of this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...jFsCHyViP-qpmw

Google groups won't let me reply to that thread so I'm starting a new
one.

OK, I did all of these things, just as MowGreen suggested:
* Downloaded the rollup package directly to the desktop.
* Cleared _every_ temp folder under C:\Documents and Settings.
* Emptied C:\WINNT\Temp.
* Stopped the Automatic Updates service.
* Renamed C:\WINNT\Software Distribution to Software Distribution.old.
* Emptied the recycle bin.
* Did a chkdsk on C: (had to reboot)
* Defragged C:
* No malware present.
* Disabled antivirus and security software.
* Installed KB891861.

Still doing it.

Also, per MowGreen's previous suggestions, I've done these things:
* Reinstalled MDAC 2.8 SP1, MSXML 3.0 SP7 and MSXML 4.0 SP
* Installed Jet 4.0 SP8
* Reinstalled IE 6 SP1
* Checked the Event Viewer log (no errors)
* Checked WindowsUpdate.log (see the previous thread)
* Checked UpdateRollupPack.log (see the previous thread)

ARRRRG MICROSOFT MICROSOFT MICROSOFT ARRRRRG!
:ounding head against desk::

(Settle down, Chris.)

Anyone know how to fix this other than blow away Windows and reinstall?

CD

Looks like you have done almost all the things that Dave Hawley finally did
to solve the same problem last year. The only one you haven't listed clearly
is service pack level of MSXML4.0

Good luck
