I have windows 2000 professional and have all the recent updates. My auto
update is set for once a week however when auto update carries out its weekly
check it always returns with critical update KB891861 required. I have tried
reinstall the rollup service pack 4 which KB891861 refers to but I still get
the same everytime auto update is carried out . can anyone throw light on
what is happening please.

Ian,

MVP Torgeir Bakken posted this resolution :

Have seen a reply that confirms this method will resolve the issue.
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...e4806cbe186956
One person posted that MSXML 4.0 SP2 was not needed to stop the prompt
to install the Rollup; one person posted that they were all needed PLUS,
Jet 4.0 SP8 had to be installed :

In a separate thread, one poster resolved the issue by reinstalling IE 6
SP1 and then installing the 3 recommended updates.

YMMV as there does not seem to be a "magic bullet" that will resolve the
prompting by AU to reinstall the Rollup.

You could check the Event Viewer log, the WindowsUpdate.log, and/or,
> The log file name for the Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 is named UpdateRollupPack.log.

Look for error codes that may provide a solution from the Windows Update
Troubleshooter. The Troubleshooter is available on the Windows sites in
the left frame, from the " Get help and support " link.
Then click the " Try solving your problem with the Troubleshooter " link
on the right.

Tried those...

Tried that...

That too...

No errors.

Whew, that's sooooo difficult to read. Searching for the word "error"
found two codes:
0x80041017
0x80070bc2

Put them in Google, no tangible solutions (unless I just missed it).

Same as above.

Here are both files zipped up:
http://devidal.tv/~chris/KB891861_errors.zip

This is on a Windows 2000 Standard file server.

Please don't send mail to my old thedoghousemail address as it no
longer works. Write to Chris (AT) deVidal (DOT) tv.

Help appreciated!

If the system is VM then strongly suggest you download the entire rollup
package directly to the VM, close IE (or whichever browser is used), and
then install it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

First, recommend that you clear the Temp folders of all contents. Do
this for all User Accounts that exist.
Then empty the WINNT\Temp folder
Rename the WINNT\Software Distribution folder to
Software Distribution.old by stopping the Automatic Update service,
right click the Software Distribution folder and choose Rename. A new
one will be created when you first visit Windows Update again.
(The updating history of the system will be located in the renamed
folder in Software Distribution\DataStore. IF, after successfully
installing Rollup1, you wish to retain the update history, then you can
copy the contents of the OLD DataStore folder to the new one. You must
first stop the Automatic Update service in order to do this )

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Do a chkdsk to ensure the HD's integrity.
Then defrag the HD.
Ensure that there is no malware present.
Temp disable the installed AV and any other security software that
either prevents changes in the registry or, blocks ActiveX changes in IE.
Install Update Rollup 1 now.
