KB892130 install problems after repairing WinXP operating system

Goal: to re-download & install 78 Windows Updates
(These were lost after repairing the operating system per HP Compaq
procedure. I didn't have a restore point set.)

Status: update downloads say they are ready to install, but installation
fails totally every time--next time says the same updates need to be
downloaded and installation fails, etc.

Windows Update website says I need to upgrade some Windows components to use
Windows Update. Blow by blow description of results:
"Message: some updates were not installed"
"The following updates were not installed: Windows Genuine Advantage
Validation Tool (KB892130)"
"Review your installation results: failed updates; ...see solution under
each problem description; check update history"
Update history says: "click on failed icon," but there is no failed icon &
WGAVT is not listed, only MS Windows Installer 3.1, which says it
successfully installed.

Sidenote: when I did a defrag, 1 file was left, I think wuaudt.exe, a file
that is active in the processes list when attempting to download
updates--could this file be corrupt?

Hello KnowledgeSeek,

1.- Use the belt-and-suspenders mode. Make a Restore Pºint.

2.- Please confirm your system clock, and Time Zone also the Date are set
properly,
Having it set incorrectly can cause this type of behaviºr.

3.- Test this WGA diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts working.
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

4.- Reboot into safe mºde

Suggest cleaning up the system (clearing out all the Temp/Tmp folders, and
included all offline content, clearing the browser TIF, Delete Cookies , do a
Disk CleanUp.
Click the Start button . In the Search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in
the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

Empty user and system "temp" folders.

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line

%systemdrive%\temp

%systemdrive%\%windir%\temp

%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

There is also a third-party fix which has had good results for a number of
folks here:

Dial-ª--Fix
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Run this program with all the functions activated in safe mºde.

Please read the page and Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download
Dial-ª-fix

Exit Safe Mode (Rebººt)

You didn't say, or at least it's not clear, whether you tried getting the
updates using Internet Explorer, by going here:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Some new ActiveX software has to be installed on XP before your computer can
be scanned.

Just follow the prompts to do so, but it should then list and download the
same updates, and install them, as those you see in the taskbar notificatiºn.

If going to the site is successful, keep going back until there are no more
critical updates to install.

Try the updates n0w

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut

<<Sidenote: when I did a defrag, 1 file was left, I think wuaudt.exe, a file
that is active in the processes list when attempting to download
updates-- <<could this file be corrupt>>

Run System File Checker

This problem may occur if some core system files have been removed or
replaced. To resolve this problem run System File Checker (SFC) scan to
identify missing system files. Then, replace these files. To run SFC, follow
these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

2. Type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

For more information about System File Checker and Windows File Protection,

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe
*Save* the EXE into a folder, let's say "C:\Downloads". After the
download completed, type the following exactly and including every
quote and space under "Run" in the Start menu:

"C:\Downloads\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

Hit the [Enter] key afterwards or click on "OK" to start the instal-
lation.

Bye,

THANKS, ENGEL. NOT CLEAR FROM YOUR #4 IF EACH OF THESE LINES IS RUN
SEPARATELY, & WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?

> %systemdrive%\%windir%\temp

ALSO SEE NOTES BELOW ON #3.

DOWNLOADED &/OR VERIFIED 93 UPDATES FROM WINDOWS UPDATE WEBSITE.
STILL AGAIN, INSTALLATION FAILED FOR ALL UPDATES.
(BY THE WAY, I DISABLED REAL TIME PROTECTION FOR THIS, SO THAT'S NOT THE
PROBLEM EITHER.)

Downloaded "C:\Downloads\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce. It would
not run, gave error message that it was not a valid Win32 application or
something like that.

“..... is not a valid win32 application”
That error usually indicates the file is corrupt.

Get a fresh copy.

Got another copy of the file and it did run. Then I chose to go to the
Windows Update website so I could see what was going on. I needed an upgrade
to a Windows component, successfully installed that, then installed the other
92 successfully. I can see now that there were layers of problems (ActiveX
et al.) and am grateful to you and Freudi both.

Only one thing outstanding: the yellow sign icon (!) in the tray still says
it's downloading updates. I guess this is just a leftover of an incomplete
process that was hung up & maybe it's just verifying that everything has been
downloaded and installed? (I have Updates set to notify me, not
automatically install.)

It's a leftover and should reslove itself after some minutes or at least
after the next Windows reboot.

Bye,
