Are you running Windows Update on an administrator account? If you're not
you should be.

Check to see if the Automatic Updates service is still running:
Click Start · Control Panel, then select Performance and Maintenance and
click System. Select the Automatic Updates tab and make sure that Automatic
is selected and then click OK.

Now check to see if Automatic Updates is service is running:
Click Start · Run and type "services.msc" without the quotes and press
enter. The Services window should pop-up. Under the name column find
Automatic Updates. If it does not appear there skip over the remainder of
this paragraph, if it is double-click on it; the properties dialog should
open up. Make sure it says "Automatic" in the Startup type box and the
Service status says "Started".

If you've made any changes to this point restart your computer and see if
Windows Update is working yet. If Windows Update continues to display errors
continue on.

Register the DLL files:
Click Start · Run and type "cmd" without the quotes and press enter. Type in
the following and press return after each line:
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wups.dll
Enter "exit" and press enter.

Check and see if Windows Update is working, if Windows Update continues not
to work please attach your WindowsUpdate.log file. To gather your
WindowsUpdate.log file select Start · Run, and then type "%windir%" and
press enter. The WindowsUpdate.log file will be located in this folder.

Hi Marsha,

See if the information provided in this post by Torgeir Bakken (MVP) helps
you resolve the problem:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...ecd61f37f77fe0

If the d/load still fails, try clearing out the contents of Update's
DataStore and Download folder by following the instructions here:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

I'm assuming that you tried the potential fixes for which I posted URLs, and
after doing so, you still receive an error when attempting to
download/install KB893066 via Windows Update?

Hi there..

Just like the other issues here, i've not been able to update my pc either
from the windows update site or automatic updates. I've read and followed
the instructions mentioned in this thread as well as others. I do have the
"Network" folder, my registy values are the same as the ones noted and i have
cleared out the "DataStore" and "Download" folders. I still get the errors.
I have XP SP2. I've never installed a third party application to play around
with my Registry so i was wondering if you could please help me fix this.

Thanks very much,
Mehrdad

I finally got my download installed by doing a "Express Install" instead of
"Custom Install" for the failed KB893066 error code 80070003. I do not use
Automatic Updates by choice. I have not had any problems doing the install
this way, other posters to this newsgroup have. Guess it is just a hit or
miss situation & I was lucky.
