Hi all,

Today after automatic updates installed some fixes (893066,893086,890859)
FTP stops responding. I am able to connect to an ftp server with ftp.exe but
doing a dir fails.

by selectivly removing and installing i found the culprit. it's KB893066.
This problem popped up today, and strangly enough several other customers
had the same problem as of today, when i deinstall KB893066 FTP works again.

Server is SBS 2003 standard edition.

Disabling the basic firewall, makes ftp.exe work again, but obviously this
is not an option.

If anybody knows an answer i will be glad to hear it.

Perhaps this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890345/

Is more related than it implies?

The information is provided "as is", it is suggested you research for
yourself before you take any advice - you are the one ultimately
responsible for your actions/problems/solutions. Know what you are
getting into before you jump in with both feet.

Actually yes I have seen this as well. I am behind a router on my home
network that is connected via PPPOE. The router is sending back a ICMP
MTU discovery packet saying that my machine needs to shorten the MTU,
but with KB893066 it's promptly ignoring it. So I am unable to send a
single file now that is greater than 1400 bytes in size.

According to the patch notes, this should only be enforcing a minimum
MTU of 576, and my router is asking that the MTU be adjusted to 1454.
So this is NOT supposed to be affecting it, but it is.

I'm experiencing a similiar problem. The two different FTP servers I've
tried with regards to downloading and browsing work fine, when I upload then
it simply times out.

It's been a bit temperamental. Twice it has actually worked, the last time
I just left it a little while (still remaining connected to the server) and
it kicked in. I'll have more of a play.

I use Homesite for editing several sites. Starting with this last batch of
updates, I notice timing out when uploading--but not all the time. If I wait
long enough, I get an error msg "Winsock Error: Blocking call cancelled",
whatever that means. Also affects WS_FTP Pro which hardly works. Sometimes
ftp works, sometimes not.
In desparation, I uninstalled these updates (of Apr 18) and all seems to
work fine now. Surely there must be a better way to go. I hate to start
tinkering with Registry settings as suggested in the MS
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890345/

Anyone have an easier fix for this. Really starts me thinking about a
linux box at the office...

I am afraid I don't know the solution, but I have exactly the same problem
with the same OS. I have traced the failure to the routine FTPFindFirstFile,
which simply hangs when 893066 in place.

Hi Tim.
Yeah.... ain't it sweet, the help they provide. What I've already done is
to just uninstall that KB893066 update and fuggitaboutit. All is back to
normal.

I figure MS will eventually fix the sec update. In the long run, however,
I'm not sure when that will be or how the heck we will know.

This whole business makes me wanna try to set up one of my old machines with
a linux desktop and see how it operates..

Good luck and best wishes to you and thanks for replying to my post..

Bruce

I had exactly the same problems when uploading. I had already checked to make
sure my program was listed as an exception, which it was. I made port
exceptions without any luck. I could upload with no trouble with the firewall
off, so I tried changing the firewall settings in my ftp program to PASV
mode. And I am now able to upload with no problems. I also deleted my port
exception and it worked fine, so essentially I only made a change to PASV
mode. I hope this helps.

I used PASV anyway, switching to PORT had some results and then it just
stopped working again.
