Trying to install this update. The other updates available in this batch
installed with no problem. I keep getting error message that file is
corrupt. I've disabled firewall and anti-virus and cleaned out temp files.
I downloaded the file manually. I tried downloading and installed
installing and opening and installing the file. I get the file is corrupt
message every time. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to get this to
install. Is there a possibility the windows update active x control is
itself corrupted? I've just never had a problem in all the updates over the
years and want to fix this problem before more updates are released. Thanks
for any help, Linda

Try a manual download of the update and install

Already tried the manual download. Downloaded to my hard drive and tried to
install and downloaded and opened. Both gave me file is corrupt. Emptied
all temp files. Disabled firewall and virus programs. Will try deleting
active x control and see what happens in case that file itself is corrupt.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. . .

"Ms Bookworm",

I am sorry you are hitting this issue. We need a little more information.
Would you mind running through an attempted installation on the Windows
Update website and sending us back the results? Here's how:

On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1:
1. Close all Internet browsers
2. Open a single Internet Explorer window.
3. In the Internet Explorer window, click Tools
4. Click Windows Update
5. When you reach the Windows Update site, click Custom Install
6. Click Review and Install Updates
7. When presented with multiple updates, uncheck all of them except for one
update (your choice)
8. Look down at the System clock and note the time. Let the minute move
forward one, so that there is no other activity associated with this
attempt.
9. Click Install. Wait for Windows Update to fail. If it succeeds, reply
back and let us know.
10. Assuming it failed, Click Start
11. Click Run
12. Type: %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log
13. Press <Enter> or Click OK
14. When the log opens, scroll down to the hour and minute you memorized in
step 8.
15. Starting at the beginning of the first entry for that minute, click and
drag down and to the right selecting the rest of the log.
16. Click Edit, then Copy, or just press the <CTRL> and <C> keys.
17. Reply to this posting.
18. When that window opens, Tell us what update you attempted to install,
and where it failed from your observation.
19. After this, on a new line, state the following and press <Enter>: Log
entries follow:
20. Place the cursor on the line under the entry from step 19, and then
click Edit, then Paste, or just press the <CTRL> and <V> keys.
21. The log entries copied in steps 15-16 should have copied into your
posting.
22. Send it to us, and let us take a look at this failure.

On Windows 2000
Repeat steps 1-22 above, with the following changes:
6. Skip this step
12. The file is "%WINDIR%\Windows Update.log" (please INCLUDE the quotes and
notice the space between windows and update)

On Windows 98/Millennium Edition
This is identical to Windows 2000, but %windir% does not exist in Windows
98. Instead:
12. Change %WINDIR% to %WINBOOTDIR%

Also, please let us know which operating system you are using and what
service pack level, if any. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I tried all the suggestions I received and none worked. Even did a system
restore, was able to reinstall all the updates except the one I was having
trouble with. I was ready to just forget about the update and hide it so
it wouldn't keep reminding me. I did change automatic updates to download
but not install instead of install automatically. I later noticed the
little icon in the task bar saying I had an update to install and figured
I'd give it one more chance and lo and behold it installed. Go figure.
BTW this was my son's computer and he's an hour away so had to run up on the
weekends to work on it. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
