KB896344 fails to install

When I ran Windows Update (after a fresh install of Windows XP SP-2), and
after a couple updates (only after which this update appeared), it reported
the KB896344 update was available. It was actually listed among a long list
of updates but I also later tried just installing that one update. Every
time it fails the install and the Windows Update history lists the failure.

I've done the Google search. I saw some posts where the user was told to
rename C:\Windows\system32\xpsp3res.dll file to the .bak extension, rerun
Windows Update which installs the KB890046 update, and try the KB896344
update. Nope, the KB896344 update still fails.

The only information given regarding the error is that an error code of
"Error Code: 0x8007F0EA" was produced during the install. Yeah, like that
is helpful. The remainder of the information is absolutely worthless, like
the self-help options of reading the FAQ, Find Solutions, and Windows
Newsgroup (Microsoft pushing their customers off to the newsgroups means
they really haven't a farking clue why it doesn't work). There is a
dependency or conflict that prevents the install of this update.

At this point, it seems the only way to get rid of the prompt in Windows
Update to include this update but which is screwed up is to uninstall it,
make sure its $NTUninstallKB896344 folder gets deleted, run Windows Update
again, and choose to hide it. Basically you hide their screwed up update.
The uninstall alarms the user with the warning that Windows Update may not
work after the uninstall, and why I run Windows Update after the uninstall
to make it does still work (and to hide the update that always fails).

When I look in its installation logfile at C:\WINDOWS\KB896344.log, I
searched on "error" or "fail" and found several lines. However, I don't
understand what most, if any, of them mean. Some of the errors look bogus,
like the developer didn't bother to code a conditional and instead just
tried to use something that wouldn't be applicable under the current setup.
Below is a copy of the LONG installation logfile for KB896344:

That was one of the articles found in a Google search when I was researching
the problem. As mentioned, it didn't work. I renamed the xpsp3res.dll file
to the .bak extension, ran Windows Update (which then proferred the KB890046
update and I installed it), and then ran Windows Update to install the
KB896344 update but it still failed.

I provided the log in case someone actually knew how to interpret the errors
and failures. Obviously the supposed dependency on the KB890046 update
wasn't sufficient or valid to get the KB896344 update installed on my
machine.

This is the solution that worked for me. I used information posted in 2
different topics for this problem.

This was one - But I had to change a couple things. I listed step-by-step
instructions below.
"All you need to do is go into your windows\system32 folder and find the file
xpsp3res.dll file and add a .bak at the end of it. Now try running windows
update and it should update fine and add a new xpsp3res.dll file to your
windows\system32 folder."

Follow this exactly and it should get you up and going. - Execute this in
order.
1.) do as listed above - Go to the windows\system32 folder and find the file
xpsp3res.dll file and add a .bak at the end of it. (don't re-run anything yet)
2.) Go to Control Panel, Add\Remove programs and click on "Show Updates"
3.) Uninstall KB896344
4.) Restart the computer
5.) Go to Contol Panel and run "Windows Update"
6.) Two items to load will show up. KB896344 again and KB890046
7.) Only Select KB896344 and install it - It worked for me.
8.) Restart the computer again
9.) Go to Contol Panel and run "Windows Update" again
10.) Now let it install KB890046 (This adds back in the xpsp3res.dll file)
11.) Restart the computer again.

Now you should have both installed and everything working AOK. That is what
it took for me to get things going. Hope it helps you out.

So, in summary, it would seem the "xpsp3res.dll file" is what causes
KB896344 to not load correctly. Good luck!!

Shucks, I just got the exact same problem (error code: 0x8007F0EA) but for
both updates mentioned [Network Diagnostic Tool (KB914440) & Update for
Windows XP (KB896344)]. I also can't figure out how to do as MS's
instructions say ("Try to install it again, or request help..."). I can't
figure out how to move both from the "Review your update history section"
where they show as having failed, and back to where you can reselect them so
as to try installing them once again (there must be some kind of trick here
that I have not figured out yet. Otherwise, why would MS instruct us to try
to install an update agian without providing a method of doing so!).

The big problem i've got here with the posted instructions is that they seem
somewhat complicated and I don't think me smart enuf to execute them. :-(

Has anyone figured out how MS expects us to do what they are telling us to
do (surely MS doesn't expect all of its users to all be propeller heads!)?

The solution provided by tta1989 works perfectly for installing KB914440 as
well, this optional update returning the same 0x8007F0EA error upon install.
