KB896423 print spooler update problems

If my HP PSC 1210 printer is powered on after windows XP boots all MicroSoft
applications crash when printing is attempted. One solution has been to
ensure the printer is powered on before XP Loads. The other solution was to
remove the KB896423 update and all works fine but left with the security
issue. Anyone else having this problem?
